View Full Version : Bear baiting question

An old timer told me once that all he use to do was nail a can of open tuna to a tree then sit and wait for a bear to come in. Is this guy full of it or would that actually work?? I know he has taken a few bears but can't believe that would be enough as most guys I know that bait put hundreds of pounds out throughout the season and have to replenish it often. Is this guy more lucky and just got bears that happened to walk through or is a tin of fish enough to attract a bear?

Lots more to it than that. Lots more.

I might try the tuna thing to disquise my scent.

It could be true. Depends where he hunted, and how long ago!

These days, there is a lot more work involved. Competing bait sites in the same area sure would make one can of tuna seem pretty scentless in comparison to what else is out there!

How many? What do you want for them?

Can you get me some fresh ones?

Fill some paint cans with fish and bananas

Let it sit in the sun a couple weeks

Hang it by the handle, punch a hole in the bottom of the can with a knife and let it drip......

For sure. Sure, can of tuna will bring him in once....then what? I think people often overlook how bad a regular chicken will smell. By one from the store and leave it somewhere for a week....and it will gag the toughest of guys.

Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. You know that's not right.

First let him sell the old ones and THEN you can ask him for some fresh ones.

The nerve of some people.....sheesh!

Simple….. Oats, KFC grease, old doughnuts from tim hortons or a bakery that they throw out. Anything rita anise scent and anything sweet. Throw it in a barrel and wait.

I forgot the beaver…. Hang a beaver in a tree. better yet weld a cage with a small opening and lag bolt it to the tree. This prolongs the time that the beaver is in the cage.

Tried the tuna thing and had no takers . We thought it would get good and ripe nailed on a tree in the sun but nada . Stick with tried and true baits , beaver , oats , dogfood , popcorn , cooking grease , etc . And be prepared for competition in your area .
