or backbreak. 20 minute fight, fish at shore, and 50 pound suffix popped like thread. I was in a rush, been too long since I had a decent fish on the line, and wanted to see her. got the tail up, I estimate she was a good 60 inches. I want my hook back, maybe next time :fighting0030:

Did it break at the knot? Have you tried a knot less knot with braid, it protects braid better than regular knots.

Take it easy on those fish, your shoulder must be stronger than you think!

Wayne - I know the feeling .... it will haunt you for a long time.

You should prepare a cradle with a couple hoisting loops for a scale - deduct the weight of the wet cradle and take some photos ..... the Alberta record of 105 lbs needs to be broken .... there are very few guys with a better chance.

Take lots of photos with some measurements.

Go get it.

Check your guides,,, Braid under pressure can cut into rod guides, creating nicks which in turn fray and weaken the braid.

Can't really tell for sure from the picture, does your rod have ceramic guides,,,, that said even ceramic guides can wear and break creating sharp edges that cut through braid.

Just something to check so it doesn't happen again.

damn wayne, your off to a good start. maybe this year i'll find time to head to your neck of the woods to try for a sturgeon. i'll even bring a small tree to plant along the shore so that years from now you can have some shade to rest under after a hard day of fishing.

Better be a fast-growing tree; Wayne ain't a young man. :scared0018:

Less than a week 'til us mere mortals can join in the fun, Mr. Christie; can't wait!!! Congrats on the good start to your tagging season...:sHa_shakeshout:

I was also going to say check your guides and your drag Wayne.

If you are snapping 50lbs fresh braid then something is wrong with your rod/reel set up.

Bwa-ha-ha!

I bought "Hillbilly Jokes for Dummies", just to have some material that isn't over your head; I don't have time to explain every joke to you! :scared0018:

Wife's car is not allowed to go fishing with me anymore; we'll be in the "Ogre-mobile". Hope the weather improves a little!

I'm going to say for all of its hype Suffix is just not that great of line. I tried it a couple years ago and found the line kept snapping even with a 5/8 oz spoon on the end.
It is junk line IMO.

WayneChristie

nothing wrong with the line or the setup, it was totally operator error this time. could easily have been a 50 pound fish. I know better, had my butt planted on the ice for so long I just got excited and forgot the first rule of dinosaur fishing, when they want to run let them or somethings going to break. :sHa_shakeshout:
maybe I will run into her again today, with all the snow on the ground I will think Im ice fishing! :sign0176:

I haven't tried it yet but every time I look at the sample on the side of the box. It doesn't feel smooth or supple like power pro. It reminds me of fireline, I don't imagine this stuff casts better. Does the feel of this line improve as you break it in?

Wow someone trying to tell Wayne Christie how to catch sturgeon is like telling Wayne Gretzky how to score goals.
The guy knows what he is doing.
And I would say the resident expert when it comes to such.

catching Sturgeon is easy. landing them sometimes not so much. the hardest part of catching them is putting in the hours.
