Hey Everyone,

Last week my father wanted to take a day off work and go out fishing with me, something that hasn't happened in a long time.:)
He is the one who got me into the sport when I was 2 years old. By 5 years old I was out fishing him he claims.

Well after a last minute decision to cancel our outing to the McCleod River South of Edson last week, my father called me up tonight and wants to get out one last time. This time he is rather insistent on getting out and assures me he will not cancel. The weather last week was to blame for the delay in our long overdue fishing excursion. (The plan is to hit the McCleod River and the Pembina, but I would really like to have a back up plan, just in case.)

So what I am asking is some greatly appreciated and needed knowledge and last minute advice from fellow Anglers. I heard a rumor that Chickakoo is pretty much iced over and Hasse is on its way. Like I said just rumors.

I just want to see my Dad catch anything doesn't matter how big or small, or what species. Hey kinda wants to take his boat out one last time this season, but I'm reluctant to.

Anyways,

I guess what I am asking is how are theses specific rivers fishing right now. Any tips on fishing any lakes would be appreciated as well.

McCleod River,
Red Deer River,
Pembina River,

Any trout lake within 2hrs of Edmonton.

Cheers everyone,

Here is hoping that I can get out and take some great Pics, create a few new memories.

I know that either way no matter where we go it will be special, just want to give it that little extra, Kinda re kindle his passion for the sport!

I just back from Star lake and although the fishing was not hot and heavy my partner got about a dozen on a leech under an indicator. This were fished chironomid style, if you moved the leech at all they wouldn't chase it, just had to let it sit. All the ponds on the way out to Star were froze over and quite a bit of ice on Mink as well but not froze over.
Heard the Red Deer by the damn is fishing very well for rockies now. Not sure if you were flyfishing or not but if so, there is couple of options
The bite is on at Wabamun right now for pike as well.

Thanks Bobalong,

Yeah we are going to be set up for both Fly fishing as well as spinning gear, or even dead stickin' it if the regs permit. Dad likes to try the fly rod but his cast is less than perfect.

I have heard a lot of things about the Red Deer and been told that at the dam is a good spot for rockies. This time of year I imagine that one could have some success on a beadhead prince, ( i think that is the name) as well a Royal Coachman.? What about Browns... would they still be present this time of year, I've heard that they are in they

Any tips on patterns would be great... you can PM me.

Cheers!

If you have not been to the Red Deer at Dickson Dam I would suggest fishing on the east side of the dam, especially if you are targeting rockies and browns. Fish right out from the parking lot. For the rockies a san juan with a prince dropper under a strike indicator will work fine, but I have had more luck with a red, pink or orange beadhead (not really any names for them as I tie them myself). Keep the beadheads a little on the smaller size, size 12 or even 14. I am sure chironomids would work as well.
We have caught a few browns fishing with the setup mentioned above, but you might have better luck with a streamer for them. I am not sure how active the browns are right now as I believe they are in their spawning mode right now or possibly just finishing.
These were caught right out from the parking lot.

Thanks again Bobalong,

I let you know how we did tomorrow. Here is hoping that we make it to the Red Deer River and have a successful trip tomorrow. Just getting out will be a treat.

Great Pics by the way.

Cheers.

Well we made it out to the Dickson Dam yesterday. Didn't get to spend to much time there as Dad wasn't feeling well.
It was my first time there as well his, really great place the water was clear and the weather was nice, cloudy but nice. The wind picked up and began to hamper my cast on the Fly rod.

Overall we didn't catch anything, mainly cause we were not there long enough only 3 hrs:cry:, but I now know that I will be coming here again, what a gorgeous place.

Only took a few pics... need a new Camera:(
