Just a couple pieces of art I've made, hubbie found some diamond willow for me to work with. I'm presently working on a 6 ft war staff now that will take months for me to make, when it is done I will post pic. I didn't think I could sell these but apparently I was wrong when the first stick with the elk teeth, grouse, and beaver sold for 300 bucks hahaha!!:sHa_shakeshout:

I did it all by hand, including peeling with my buck knife, sanding, and wrapping the leather handles

No worries Dave, you're not alone!

Most of us of immigrant stock are not aware of the term ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talking_stick

Both beautiful and functional!
Not only for the symbolism and respect demanded, but who really wants to interrupt someone with a club in their hands?
:)

Thanks for sharing!

Nikanit ... excellent craftsmanship & very interesting pieces .... I had one given to me that I understand is/was a ceremonial talking stick from an Aboriginal community in B.C. This one also has the Ruffed Grouse feathers is there some significance to using grouse feathers ?

Haha...no...it's just that you have to be careful in the materials you use when you're going to sell something using animal parts/feathers, and grouse feathers are ok. My war staff will be having owl feathers on it. It will be a showpiece item, not for sale. The feathers were collected off an owl that my hubbie got a found wildlife permit for. The staff has some excellent diamonding too and will be an amazing piece! I like diamond willow because it makes it so that no two are alike, and you truly have a one of a kind item

Nikanit:

Those are beautiful sticks.

The late great "Mungo Martin" would approve.

P.S. I heard Macleod ^^^^ is holding a potlatch. He has guns to give away. Lots of guns. And trucks and boats.:) He He He.

Looking at the items in question, I suspect the name was derived from someone saying "I think I'm going to let my stick do the talking now". OUCH ;)

I wonder what would happen if they started to use a talking stick (only the holder may speak) in parliament?

I'm guessing it would be a very different, and much better place!

Here is one of mine. Not so "Nice", but it usually works (keeps others speechless for a while). :)

Is that a "Medicine Bag" you have hanging off the stick?

Stunning artifacts . Do the feathers on each stick have symbology as to the owner?

No, I use grouse feathers as they can be used for art, cannot use migratory or raptors. My War staff will have owl feathers that were procured by my husband. He found a dead owl, so he got a found wildlife permit. The staff will only be a showpiece item, not for sale. It will take months to complete but I'll be sure to post the pic when it's done.

Yes. BTW, I did not make this talking stick, it was given to me.

Zip, That is a plains style Horn war club, which are used for both ceremony and battle.
