Anybody using autochart on the 998? Trying to weigh the $200 over the 999 if I can find one.

From what's written online the changes aren't major.

AutoChart will work on either one.

998 has external GPS receiver that you can exchange (for a fee (55 -60 dollars)) for the new HS(Heading sensor) receiver. But only if you ship the receiver back in its original and unopened package.

999 has internal receiver and if you want the external HS it will be an additional $200.00 or so.

These are some considerations many do not look at.

Would you happen to know if the transducer is the same between the two? Would it happen to be the 800khz variant?

I believe the 998/999 have the same transducer. I think it was the 898/899 that have different transducers.
