Kootenay Lake.

Hello All. I'm taking my two sons and son in law fishing to Kootenay Lake in two weeks. I have never been there before and wondering if anyone can help me with types of lures/tackle to use and where to fish? We are staying at Kootenay Bay, right by Crawford Bay. My boat has downriggers which I have never used either. So any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

personally I would stick to using a bucktail behind a planar board on the surface. Ive caught several rainbows over 15 pounds using this technique the last few years.

Bucktail for sure,greens,blues and don't forget the Grey ghost,also plugs work well#69 us good,for spoons use flutter spoons and pick up yourselves a ruby red spoon.
The silver apex has done very well for us over the years for both rainbows and dollys.good luck!!!!!

Head straight across the lake toward Balfour and troll the shoreline south of the inlet starting down a few kms and head all the way down to where the train bridge is. This area seems to be pretty good.

Drag some Lyman Lures, Hoochies and Coyote Spoons behind a flasher.

You will be in business.

We used to use wedding band spinners tipped with maggots to fish for kokanee. At the time that's what most people seemed to use.

No need to go running all over the lake lots of great rainbows and bulls out from the mouth of crawford bay and north . Water will be creeping over 63º-65º. Now if a normal summer. Some good lure info above . Bucktails when the water is rough, plugs/apex on downriggers when the water is glassy. Keep an eye on the cliff face just inside crawford bay on the north bulls and bows will on occasion pin kokanee on the wall and form bait balls . :)hope that helps tight lines .

go into the gill and gift at the ferry, they have everything you need. Last time out I got lots of smaller rainbows trolling a silver/copper williams wobbler with no weight. Will keep the boys entertained while waiting for a big bow.

Unlightly as your trolling to slow. With out the best terminal swivels and such spoons at big bow speed will make a mess of your line in roughly20 min. Sampo bearing swivels or radiant bead chains are required. If your catching 2-4 lb bows and bulls your going to slow:)

me personally I'd go with the bucktail with a violet top and white body. I caught a rainbow in the west lake. only about 18 inches but I caught it on a giant mayfly nymph just off shore in the evening.

I also heard wedding band for kokanee. Trust me fish for kokanee if you have kids. I did it as a kid and had a blast because you rake them in and can handle them. The Gerrard rainbows a kid could not handle

I am heading out to fish Kootenay and duck lake for a week tomorrow. Staying in Creston. Temperatures are still supposed to be relatively hot so i am not sure if we can call it fall fishing just yet. Any tips for this time of year?

I saw these at the Husky station on the way through Nelson. Did't have any luck on flys in July. Lymans in hot pink and dolly patterns, and a williams whitefish were hot for me then.
