Get one with a rubber net, not string... Less hook snags.

Frabill makes a nice folding rubber net. You can find it at BPS. They come in a couple different sizes and vary in price from $60-90.

I've just been using a cheap Lucky Strike net from Crappy Tire for about 3-4 years now. The netting is coated with rubber or something and doesn't seem to damage the fish or take off scales, I usually only net fish I am going to keep anyways though. Its seen a lot of action and is still holding up fine, hard to go wrong for $35

The Lucky Strike rubber net has also been revamped by local Ab boy who recommended a flat bottom for less stress on fish. Can't wrong for price/quality as mentioned already.

I use and prefer a "Basket Net made of Knotless nylon mesh with a Rubber coating and a flat bottom shape"

The basket shape does not cause the fish to thrash and curl themselves up in the net as much. The rubber coating removes less slim and scales, also makes it so your hooks don't get caught so you spend more time fishing less time getting hooks out. The knotless nets also remove less scales and slime which is good for the fish. I also go for the finer mesh so you don't split the fins of the fish before you release them.

I do not like rubber nets for anything but walleye. They are very heavy and don't push through the water well. They are also too small for most things I might want to net, such as large pike. So then you have to carry two nets which seems to add clutter to my boat.

I must say though, over 95% of the fish I release are left in the water and just released boat side.

I would use a 3" mesh about 150 long 10 feet deep.. leave in the water for about 6 hours and see what you get
