The real cost lies in the fact that a vinyl deck (e.g. Duradeck) will eventually tear, cut and shrink. Seams and contact areas with the house, handrail posts, stair posts, etc. are weak spots where water gets in.

If you don't inspect and maintain, the wood structure will rot out sooner than it would have if the framing had been left bare and free to dry in the wind.

I quit looking at it when I started figgering out how many decks I'd have to replace before it paid for its self. I wouldn't live long enough

I am currently having my very old deck and shed replaced. My property is a construction zone. The dumpster left yesterday with the remains of said shed and deck, plus half the contents of the shed and some neighbour additions(?). Quite aside from having to put in 4 yards of fill to correct the grade issues under the old deck ...? Had the discussion with the contractor about the possible vinyl/composite decks. He is very experienced in this and advised that they just do not stand up to our climate, despite what the proponents say. Some of them that he installed ( competently) 8-10 years ago are already splitting and just coming apart and just "done". If you want "premium", then do it in cedar (very much $). If you are not going to live there forever, just do it with pressure treated wood, which will go 20+ years in most applications. My old deck was basically scrap untreated spruce - I replaced a couple of rotted out boards over the years - the previous owners never did anything right, just cheap - but it lasted about 27 years (?).

Might be best to contact a local installer for a quote.

We have only had ours for about a year, so can't really comment on how well they last. Ours was about 5k with rails, T&G plywood installed. It was a bit more, but I do not have a garage so I needed the storage under the deck, which was a big reason we went with the vinyl.

The decks that are not lasting are because of abuse and poor installations!
I have a buddy that was an installer as was his dad. I worked with them years ago and they never have call backs. If the seams are PROPERLY welded it should be extremely hard to separate the two pieces. I've seen and help repair countless bad install jobs. I believe the price is around 6$ a square foot supplied and installed.
I build composite decks for a living, and there are systems available that will make the underside of the deck waterproof as well.
