A photo of director Steven Spielberg posing alongside a dead triceratops has gone viral after people commenting on the photo on Facebook somehow mistook the large animatronic beast as an actual trophy slaughter, despite the fact that dinosaurs have been extinct for literally millions of years.

On Sunday, a man named Jay Branscomb posted the image of Spielberg seen above, taken on the set of the 1993 film Jurassic Park, alongside a caption that read “Disgraceful photo of recreational hunter happily posing next to a Triceratops he just slaughtered. Please share so the world can name and shame this despicable man.” The caption was, most likely, making reference to the recent firestorm that followed Texas cheerleader Kendall Jones’ photos showing her alongside dead endangered species she hunted in Africa.

It was also, fairly obviously, a joke — but a few people missed that fact, and immediately labelled Spielberg a heartless, unforgivably selfish killer of animals, much to the immediate and concurrent chagrin and delight of all those looking on. (Warning: foul but hilarious language follows.)

Facebook
While it is unclear as to whether those who originally villainized Speilberg for his trophy hunt were joking or not, the Facebook thread below the image — which has grown to more than 7,000 posts and counting — quickly devolved into people doing one of three things: pointing out that the photo is Steven Spielberg and, obviously, he did not hunt the dinosaur:

Some people really do believe everything they see/read on the internet. Just another reason i stay out of social media and large cities.

For it to be an ethical hunt you have to use a flint lock; you know, the way it was done before they went extinct. :thinking-006:

Lol

Looks to me like a lot of folks are just trying to boost the joke through over-the-top buy-in.

I think the real joke is on those who have mistaken this for actual outrage.

Personally, I'm down with this - Free range dino meat is far better than the feedlot dino meat you buy in stores.

Tastes like chicken, oddly.
