Hey all,
searched threads a bit, so I apologize if it's an exhausted question...what's a good 2 way radio for hunting? I mean is there a decent radio capable of a good distance between them, and most of all something that has headsets/mic/etc that can be quality enough for hunting buddies to chat or minimally give/recieve the other status updates without sacrificing his positioning. Ideally a set or package that could be purcased from local cities or even Bass Pro/Cabelas, etc. Thanks all.

Most of the motorolas are pretty good. Mine work fine across a quarter of bush. No remote mikes, but they've got a jack for an earplug, never used that.
The Rhinos look neat in that they are gps capable, and show where your partner is, pricy though. Not sure about there battery life.
I don't use mine too much, but they are nice when you need them. Mine are rechargeable, and can run on AA's too. I think I got em a best buy a few years ago, about $100 for the set. Sorry too lazy to go looking for a model number, plus they're probably obsolete already :-)

I've got a set of these a couple years ago, work OK with earplug and throat mic, good up to a couple kms at best, not sure where they get the 'up to 37km under ideal circumstances'.....for a really serious set, you need to spend about 5 x the money or more, not worth it to me in most situations.

Look at getting ones in the states-you can get 5 watts there-unlike here where CRTC limits them legally to 2 watts. It was supposed to change this year but hasn't yet.....ig money isn't an object have a look at the Garmin Rino series, built in GPS, and when you hit your talk button your buddies can see where you are on their Rino's!

Very cool...good info. More range is always better, rechargeable packs are good, but the ability to use 'AA's in a pinch is good to, and I especially want the quality of something that we can communicate when spotting/stocking (quality ear peice/mic). Is there any regulations/issues with radio devices crossing the border...other than the normal crazy issues? Thanks guys

No issues crossing the border as far as i know-my busy just had his mailed to his house from a US company. There are several models with the Rino, mine has a lithium battery that will last 4-5 days of steady use on hunting trips, and you can buy an additional battery pack that takes AA's if youre going out for a couple weeks. They all take earbuds as far as i know-mine has a voice-activated mic, so i dont' even have to fumble in my pocket to find the button.
