I'm planning to try Spray Lakes on Friday by boat, thought I'd ask if anyone has had any luck there and maybe where? Hoping that a deep mountain lake like that might produce on a hot day :character0053:

Head out straight from the boat launch to 50-70ft of water and jig a smelt chunk in the bottom 5-10ft. A few hard jigs then let it sit still...repeat. never lets me down. I've trolled it alot but the jigging is the go to move for me. The little bay up the lake on your right side way up towards the river is a good jigging spot as well.

Many thanks my friend :)

I was going to ask about lures as well but didn't want to push my luck. Jigs it is!! I've had better luck with them anyway.

Buzz bombs, cicada's white tube jigs all produced well for me in the winter!

Good luck out there!

Nice and slow up the road if you don't want the rocks to knock the you know what out of your paint.

Good reminder thanks, I've been up that road a number of times but not with the boat! Should maybe look at some rock tamers...

Hi all, well here is what I use and it works pretty well. This system allows you to catch lakers and whites.

Use a 3/8 oz lime green jig head or an orange and chartruese yellow jig head with a power bait white 3" single tail body attached to the jig. One foot above the jig tie on a #6 royal coachman fly. Cut the smelts you need to put onto the jig into thirds and put one of the pieces onto the jig hook. For the fly buy some maggots and put a couple of them on the fly. Drop your jig down and bang it hard a couple of times on the rocks at the bottom of the lake and then position your jig 6" off the bottom and let it sit there for a minute or two, repeat the process. Most people I take out there laugh at my setup but after I reel in a couple they are asking to borrow a fly to tie on. The biggest laker I have caught out of there was caught on the coachman. Somedays the lakers just want a small presentation to eat. I too just go out straight from the boat launch there is a great hole there that if you find it you'll catch them most of the day. Bring lots of rope for your anchor. If you have a bigger boat this time of year for the next month or so is also very good way down by the dam off one of the points there. I have had 100 fish days there later in the fall.

Good luck and I hope you have fun!

Cheers

How big are the lakers in there? What is the average caught size?

This depends where you fish in the lake but 1.5-3 lbs is the average fish for lakers and under 2 pounds typically for the whites.

Well I had fun, nice day on the lake. Caught nothing but snagged something and broke a hook in half :thinking-006:

Is putting a maggot on the fly at Spray OK to do? I always thought it was no bait but smelt were not considered bait.

Really like that idea and will be giving it a try myself.

I used that same jig with the white powerbait but no smelt - the smelt's the key! I think maggots are allowed, just not bait fish. My fish finder was going crazy at a 35-40 ft depth close to the opposite shore from the launch.

Was there about a month ago and we managed to grab a lake trout from shore. Used a smelt set up with a heavy weight to hold it on bottom and Bell. Had another one on using a Bonner and smelt but lost that guy.
