Choke selection

Well took the plunge today an bought an O/U in 20 guage. Bought a CZ Mallard as it felt the best in my hands and like the double triggers over single trigger.

Question I have is what do the seasoned pros run for chokes top and bottom for grouse? Be using 2 3/4" inch #6 shot mainly. May drop down to 7 1/2.

I generally run Mod over IC for all upland game.

My preference is more to open chokes , IC / mod are about as good as it Getz however for an all around upland SXS it O/U
My favourite gun however us CYL/CYL , over the dogs I have never had an issue killing anything from grouse to wild pheasants if the birds are holding .
If they are getting up 50 yards away however , it's a crap shoot no matter WHAT you are using !!:thinking-006:

I'd say first pull cyl with 7 1/2 or even eights. Second pull ic or mod with your 61/2. You probably touch off 3 times as many 71/2-8 loads as the second barrel is reserved for the hail marys.

I use a single shot 840 .410 with 6's. Full fixed gives me 12 - 15 hits inside a dinner plate at 25 yards.

I hate picking 20 little 7.5 or 8 pellets out of a piece of meat. Mostly use IC and mod for upland. Upland are not that tough to kill or bring down to the ground so I dont want to weigh them down with lead shot. Might not have 30 pellets inside a pie plate but it only takes 2 or 3 to bring them down.

Cat only makes head shots so he never has to pick lead shot out of the meat.

Cat doesn't aim. He pulls the trigger and tells his shot where to hit.

If you are aiming a shotgun you are doing it all wrong! Cat cant possibly aim with all the smoke those poles produce. He has to send the dog to see if he hit the bird before the smoke clears.:sHa_shakeshout:

I tend to use cylinder choke a lot with an IC or Mod in the second barrel loaded with #6's for Pheasant and for Grouse when they are in close cover.
IC and Mod for Sharptail's and Huns in open country just because the shots tend to be further out. I favor #6's here in the open barrel too but I usually put a faster load of 5's or 4's in the tighter barrel for the long shots. You don't really need the heavier shot to kill the bird but it retains it's velocity better than light shot does further out.
