Went to Smoke lake for a week at the camp ground and had a beautiful stay

What a very nice lake with lots of fish just not what I was looking for :confused0024:

The Lake Whites were there of course(couple dead) ..I just could not find them:angry3: next month will be easier as they will be coming in to the shallows for the pre spawn

but when I got bored I would catch another 20 Walleye some on fly rod ..:47b20s0:

also met fellow AO member and watch him catch Eye after Eye on his fly rod and it was his first time as he tried out his new fly's for lake whites and got them

so from being woke by Trumpeter Swans to watching a young Bull Moose frolic in the creek .. too watching the 2 young Bald Eagles learning to fly and hunt

Fox Creek was a blast but the Whites were elusive this time

even saw a 6 pack cloud:fighting0030:

aaahhh such is fishing

140 + walleye was a nice treat

got to love fishing hey:sHa_shakeshout:

enjoy

David:)

I had the same experience several years ago, only time I ever fished it. Remember it like it was yesterday as it was my first trip out with a real boat, a "new to me" Lund. My dad and I ran out of bait. Nothing of any size but a memorable day none-the-less.

Nice pics, that white is chunky. So there really are beer clouds...

25 years ago. The flats at the east end of Smoke Lake were a green mass of plankton. And the walleye and pike were not in evidence, but the huge schools of Whites were right on the surface literally creating wakes. Some very large ones (I would say some 10 pounders) - fins showing out of the water. A few morons cruising in and throwing large metal (Len Thompson pike lures) at the schools and just scattering them - hilarious? - well, I guess you might snag one? We had never caught or even targeted whites in the summer and had no idea at all what might work. No fly fishing gear. So, we tried silently moving up in front of the schools in the Zodiac with the electric motor. Cast out tiny 1/32 oz. dark green jigs and plastic tails (perch ice fishing gear luckily in my box) with some split shot to facilitate casting, very light line (4/6 lb. mono leaders), in front (theory - big plankton ?) of the schools. Spent the next several hours hooking one after the other whites (11 actually landed in all) - kept a couple of 5-6 pounders (which were tasty) - what a blast!! Had to be very careful not to "horse" them at all, or they would get off (very soft mouths). Magical afternoon - it was so much fun. I've never seen that phenomenon again, there or elsewhere, or ever caught another one in the summer.

I've caught a few nice whites thru the ice at Smoke. I didn't see many but the ones that I did see and catch were brutes. Between 6 and 8 lbs. I was fishing in about 2-3 feet of water under the ice. Would love to catch one on a fly.

Sounds like a blast hammering some walleye. Great job.

That's why I was there but they were not rising that much and they did not like what flys I used ..here is a post that shows about what was under that green slime that day when whites are hunting then get out to your local lakes and catch them its not impossible as everyone thinks

thanks for sharing schmedlap

I love when the whites are hunting and you see schools rising around you just anchor and fly cast or bobbers cast or do like schmedlap has posted

Been a few years since I fished Smoke but back then it was always good for walleyes although nothing of real big size. Do know when they test netted and trapped it years back, there were some brute pike pulled in. Never caught anything real big pike wise, maybe 10lbs and never tried for whites.

One of my more embarrassing moments occurred right by the boat launch in about 3 feet of water. No idea what I did but when I stood up and pulled the cord to start my motor on my tiller style aluminum boat I fell out straight over the back of the boat. Motor did not start thankfully, but the kids with me and people onshore had a good chuckle when I stood up in the lake soaking wet. I smiled and bowed. Memories!

Thanks for the report and pics and congrats on the walleyes.
