I like the idea however how is the battery life in the cold?

I would be curious to see how the battery charge degrades in -10 and colder while drilling through 2-4 feet of ice.

I will wait to see some reviews and real world examples of the Auger in use.

Thanks for sharing the link though! :)

I'm 2 seasons in. No issues other than me forgetting to recharge between uses...lol.

Interesting. Already have several ice anchor bits including home made one for ice climbing anchors.
Looks good though. Be interesting to see one up close.

If you check out their site they list this item as a quick change system for the actual auger flights! That means you can switch out the 8" for the 10" in seconds and all without tools!!!

It will be interesting to see how many holes those ions will be able to do with the 10" bit...

That would be handy then. Not sure if I would have the need to switch quickly, but will probably put on list to obtain one.:);)

New for this year as well is the addition of a reverse gear to the power head. They claim this eliminates nearly all slush from the hole.

I'll stick w/ my forward only thx.

I think the reverse will be great for those that have a hut. Scooping out watery slush in a hut is a pain.

I think they were $499 at Canadian tire. Not sure what the extension cost? But yeah they will come down in price.

Having used a Gator with reverse, you're really not missing much if you don't have it. In all the time I had my gator I think I used it maybe twice, and didn't find that it cleaned the holes out very well at all...

That's what I thought when I saw the video. Besides, the benefit of the electrics is how quiet/stealthy they are below the ice.

A small ice tornado below the hole would certainly ruin that IMO.

if you are hunting pike some days the more commotion below the ice the better, it can draw them in from quite a distance

Agreed, I use the dull end of a spud bar to tap the ice when it slows down and they usually come a runnin'

I was under the impression that the Ion was coming out with a new model head with a 10" blade.
I question it's efficiency and longevity running on the old power plant. Otherwise why wouldn't they have released the 10" blade years ago? :thinking-006:

10-07-2014, 05:21 AM
The ION is going to change ice fishing ,just like the cordless drill did.
20 years from know ,it will all be electric ice augers.

I bought an 8" Ion as well this year with the 10" auger to go with it. I also purchased an extra battery. I hope it is as good as the reviews suggest. I will still have my Jiffy propane auger as backup.
