A Weekend of Firsts

This weekend I decided to go try out a couple new places and try my luck with some new species.

I started out at Obed Lake going after my first brown trout. Things were slow and after a few hours with no bite I turned my attention to perch and caught a half dozen borderline keepers.

As dusk started to roll in I turned my attention back to brown trout and was rewarded with my first brown trout. I caught 3 more but couldn't find any larger ones.

I then packed up and decided I was going to go after my first Cuttie so I started the journey down to Muskiki Lake. Since I didn't print a map or have a GPS I soon started to question my location and found a place to sleep.

The next morning and a short ride I was there and greeted with this absolutely beautiful weather and scenery(minus the snow lol).

It didn't take long until I caught my first cutthroat, a decent little new stock.

I stayed out for a few hours doing a lap of the lake and in total was able to land 12 fish, the largest being this 15.5 incher.

Fishing slowed down and a breeze started to roll in so I decided to start heading back home. I stopped at one lake that I was interested to look at the trail in. I see someone else had the same idea.

I didn't stop to fish there but I still had lots of daylight so I stopped and fished the Embarras River for a bit. It took a while but eventually I found these couple rainbows(athabasca rainbows???).

And then just before calling it a day I found my first arctic grayling.

All in all it was a pretty good weekend with 3 new species(and maybe my first athabasca rainbows).

That's pretty sweet to catch three new species like that. Beauty Cutt you got their. To bad you didn't slay the browns, the big ones are in their just have to find them. I've never fished the lake but would love to.

May I ask what you were using to entice the browns? You should try large rapalas 4-6 inches long probably. Give them a good meal to go after.

I was using a wooley bugger behind a type 3 sinking line. I figured I needed something a little bigger for the larger trout so did try dragging a streamer but it didn't get any attention.

I think I need a type 5 line for Obed, I don't think I was getting quite deep enough.

I also tried a canadian wiggler for a bit but didn't have any luck with it either.

Good job I should have came with you I thought I was going to have freeze to death on my Saturday quest.

On a side note we were catching burbs on Saturday might have to add to your species list

Would you actually use a rapala that large? I wanted to try some rapalas but I had no idea what trout might go for as I have tried some rapalas for different trout but never had any luck. I always figured that something 3 inches max would be as large as a guy would want to go but almost all the lures that length don't go down deep enough(probably want to fish around 15 feet deep I think).

There is a spinner attached to that swivel, he darn near swallowed the thing and unfortunately removing it made a bit of a mess...

I hope you do get one, I am enjoying the competition we got going on in the derby. It is fun having that extra motivation to get out and try these new places/types of fishing.

Nicely done Rav! That's quite a neat variety - I like that a lot! Last weekend I did well too, catching 18 bulls, 4 browns, 1 cutty, and 1 brookie. It's funny, when I was going after species each one took me forever to catch one. Now I'm catching them in one fell swoop...I must be learning! lol

No, there is a 0 keep limit on the Embarras. I wish I could have kept him because he probably wasn't going to survive...

The measuring board is called a hawg trough and it is a great board. The only issue with it is that it only goes to 30 inches so not big enough for big pike.

I ordered mine from austin canoe and kayak while in the states. Ack, hook1 and cabelas(us site only) sell them, unfortunately I don't think any Canadian stores have them so shipping might be a bit pricey.

An alternative if you can't find one for a reasonable price is the Plano bump board, it is nice in that it expands from 18 to 36 inches. Thefishinhole and I thought Cabelas used to sell them but looking on both of their websites it seems they don't anymore though... Frabill has one on amazon that looks pretty much the same for only $13 and free shipping on orders over $25 though. I personally like the hawg trough better as it is more durable but the expandable would be a lot easier to carry if hiking in etc.

I know people use big bait for lakers, I haven't really heard of people using lures that large for other trout though. Next time I head out I have a couple rapalas that I will try now that I know to try a little larger.
