Yep, its getting near the end and I have yet to put a tag on a muley buck here in 148. Its not that I've seen bucks....lots of em....good ones too. But things just havent worked out.
Last weekend I was in the area of a great buck that was taken. I had hiked them hills for days, even got told via email where he was. IF only I had checked my email! But instead another fella (lucky s.o.b) got him on saturday.
(Thanks HunterB for the tips wish I would have been on the ball)
Tuesday night I put eyes on a good one, had him 70 yards away for 20 mins or better. He was a ruttin fool, if only a guy could hunt tuesdays. Went back yesterday....nothing....vanished....again....just like he did durring archery.
Here's where it gets interesting, I am back to work now. I can only hunt that last hour of these few remaining nights. Thank godness I live, and work and hunt all in the same area. So its down to the wire. Not much time left now. Will I hoist the head of a monster muley in 2008.......or will I try to stomach tag soup?
Wish me luck! I will keep you posted.

I will eat my 416 mulie tag and most likely my elk tag. Still hope to pop a small fawn with a head shot so that I can do a whole deer roasted on a spit this summer. Will have to do it Saturday since we are hunting in 318 on the last day.

Are u hunting elk in 416 too? Its been a while since I been down there but I hear the elk #'s are way down. I've seen quite a few mulies in the openings down around Sheep Creek if that helps at all. Good luck

My problem isn't finding the deer (I've tagged out every year drawn) it has been finding the time to get there and hunt. Between waterfowl, pheasants, moose, whitetails and playing hunter host, I just haven't had the time to get there more than once this season. Elk is a harder draw to get there.

Well fellas, I took it right down to the last hour of the last day before deciding tagging out on a Muleybuck in 148. Its truly a story of redemtion so I will have to share it with you:
It was early October, I had a few days off so I grabbed my bow and went for a drive in hopes of finding a decent muley to stalk. I checked all my favorite spots & shot a few partridge along the way. But by the end of the first day I hadn't found a buck worth pursuing. Second day....more of the same. Shortly after dark I stopped at one of the local farmers for a few minutes of B.S'n and possibly a cold one. He then told me he had seen a 5x5 muley that was wider then his ears earlier in the week while finishing harvest. The next morning (with a pounding head) I headed out to the general area he had talked about and began glassing. Sure enough I found the buck he was talking about, along with a couple dinks. I watched them all bed down along a slough edge and made my stalk.
The first stalk I was about 70yrds away before being busted by one of the lil ones. They all bound off into the coulee. But the big one and one other seperated from the rest of the group. I gave them about an hour and then persued on foot. I found them bedded in a draw and belly crawled into bow range (44yrds) Stood up to let an arrow fly. When I released my string it got "caught up" in my bino's and I missed (by a mile)
I never seen that buck again......That is untill Tuesday. I was travelling the same area when I watched the same buck courting a doe. I had him at 70yrds for a long time, man I wish I could hunt Tuesdays! Wednesday.....nothing.......Thursday......the same. Friday......there seems to be a pattern forming here. Saturday, had my doubts about checking this area but decided to give it one last go. Nothing.....getting to be 4:20 and my pulse was starting to quicken. Looked at my county map, realized that the coulee I was hunting joined another that headed into Many Islands Grazing lease. I headed there quickly, somebody was there already! They headed east I decided west......and there he was 400yrds (ish) on the top of the coulee. I only seen him for a second as he went over the edge. I grabbed my bino's, rifle and took off running. (This is a little off topic but boy I think I need to start going to the gym.) I crested the hill and there he was with a dozen does and one other decent 4X4. Got set......BOOOOM! And folded him like a cheap tent! The best part was I was able to wave at a couple locals looking to tag a doe. They set up on the fenceline and everything else ran right at em. BOOM....doe down, and I got help dragging my buck out.
Sorry no photos yet, will post em when I get home from work. Not a great scoring buck but loads of character, one to be proud of anyways.
