View Full Version : Belize fly patterns
Was wondering which flies fishers use in Belize for permit, bones, and tarpon. Last year someone posted a pic of a fantastic looking crab fly used in Belize but I can't find it. I hear certain shrimp patterns work also. Any suggestions? BEL

I think the flies they use are similar in Belize, we used the shrimp and crazy Charlies' in Cuba, but never fished for tarpon

Go to this link and check out their flies. You can buy them or just use the pics as a guide so you can tie your own. Good shrimp and crab patterns there, also some good Crazy Charlie patterns there too.

Below are some of my personal favorite patterns. The one on the top right is one that I have caught a ton of bonefish on. The others have all caught fish. But not as much as that one in particular. The fly is super simple. Bone fish hook size 10 or 8. Squirrel tail tied in the middle. Then grizzly hackle tip tied on each side. 1/8 bead chain head.

I have a home away from home in Belize and I've fished it for many years. 95% of the time I throw a tan crazy charlie in sizes 4-6 for the bones and a Turneffe crab for the permit shots. I try and mess around with the amount of flash and bring a spool of mono to rig up weed guards if needed. The turtle grass in BZ can push anyone's patience. My go-to for tarpon around the island is a size 1 black death!
Don't forget some toothy leader for the cudas, there are tons of them and they're a ton of fun to huck poppers at them in the shallows.
Good luck!!

Where you going in Belize? We've never been but our sons have, and we've decided that is the destination for our next hot holiday. And I definitely want a place with good fly fishing close by.
We are leaving on Feb 11 and returning Mar 3. Looking forward to it. This year I would like to do more fishing on my own. BEL
Forgot to add destination. Not sure of the order as of yet, but we will visit Placencia, Punta Gorda, and San Pedro. BEL

Placencia and Punta Gorda,,,, think permit (bauer crab),,,,, and tarpon (gummy minnow,,,, there are literally millions of glass minnows around many of the cayes!)
Thanks guys for all your help. BEL

No matter what you bring, and it could be 500 different flies, the guide will usually sigh, shake his head and turn his eyes towards heaven!:)
Livin, I hear ya on that one. LOL. BEL

If you use a guide. And if you do, they will probably supply what works.
