South end has no access and gated off to public. A couple hoes are doing some work. People are also fishing dried meat lake.

Me and the boy always seem to have good luck there, but lots of people tell us there are no fish in that lake... Hasn't stopped us from pulling out lots of Jack.

The main issue with these lakes is the access. Depending on whether or not they are plowed out they can be pretty ignorant to get in and out of. Due to this fact the middle lake gate is often locked up because too many idiots with cars get stuck down there.

For us it isn't a big deal as we are only a few miles away, but if you are coming from further it would suck to get there and find out you couldn't get in.

Last year the snow was bad enough that we could only get in with the snowmobiles.

Where is that chart for ice thickness versus walking vs car vs truck etc ?

http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/safety/ice/thickness.html

Already snowmobile thickness on most smaller lakes.

It would be nice if this cold weather would stick around for another couple weeks, then we could probably start driving on most lakes.

Just be careful people, quite a few lakes with natural springs in the parklands and boreal part of Alberta. Can be a foot thick in one spot and an inch 20 feet away. Devils and Battle lake come to mind.

Thanks tips. He didn't ask for the regulations, he asked for ice conditions. Maybe he wants to know how the ice is developing. Maybing he has a secret lake in the area and rather than naming that lake, he asks about the lake that people likely see everyday. Maybe he drives his snow mobile across the lake to his buddies house to play poker on friday nights.

ditto. And if your not fishing, why ask for ice report?

I like to fish and when it opens I want to fish Sylvan. There are also other open lakes in the area and if Sylvan is freezing over then I might get an idea of conditions in the area as sylvan is a good indicator of ice conditions in the area. Nobody needs your arrogant commentary. This is an ice report thread and not a question about regulations.

It was also possible that the question was asked because the guy was interested in going fishing... TJG at least provided an answer to one of these possibilities, I don't see you doing anything here other then breaking a forum rule...

TJG, keep posting the good information up. Even if it wasn't Deer's original intent it is good you posted that for the other people that might not realize Sylvan is closed(for whatever reason it is...).

Canmore area not looking so good for ice fishing atm.

Gap lake is not safe yet, still has holes and evidence of melt.

Goat pond is frozen on one half, casting still possible but futile. Saw some people ice skating on it, wouldn't recommend that myself.

Spray is kind of a mess, the ice near the dam is fishable, probably around 5 inches. Not worth a trip if you are from Calgary.

yes keho does have beautiful clear 6-8" ice at the inlet. however, if you drew a line from the west inlet straight east to the first bay south of the outlet, everything south is super bubbly white ice. if you stepped on ice at the boat launch you will likely go thru, best to start your entry a bit back and test drill onto where you want to fish. the outlet was easily punctured at shore with the usual stretches of open water (not enough or close enough to jig thru. other than that, the ice at the outlet (pray for no snow) is really beaut ice in colour, just needs a few days of ultra cold to get over to the thicker bits.

On Sturgeon you can see dark patchs where the flood water has been rising, but with this -30ish weather and winds, you would think the ice has got to be getting good. Haven't seen anyone on the lake yet though. Snipe in my experience is warmer for some reason and if Sturgeon has 6inchs, Snipe will only have 4.

Tried Chestimere today for a few hours. No bites in 3 hours of fishing, but lots of ice. At least 10". Tons of snowmobilers and quadders doing donuts and burn outs. Was actually making waves under the ice and water kept rising up and out of the hole. The water was extremely murky, Im guessing from waves.

From my experience on Chestermere, the water is always murky waves or no waves. I don't even bother bringing my camera out there any more. I have fished it for years and never had more than 12" of visibility.

2014-12-06: Twin Valley Reservoir - ice thickness varied from 5 to 8".
Not many bites from the pike, but managed to find a keeper.

Did you eat it? How'd it taste? Last time I fished the lake the water didn't smell right ever since they drained the sesspool the government created in highriver into the channel.

Boyle area, 6-8" ice. lots of flood water. Very difficut for sleds and quads. You may get stuck with the flood water. Even walking, 4" + flood water. With the melt this week, would recomend staying off untill it freezes again. Walking in water/slush most of the time. We need 30 degrees below again for a week! Take your high top rubber boots.

west side of twin today had pockets of thinner ice with 4 inches of water, other spots were white ice and a bit thicker but inconsistent. east side had varying ice between 6 and 4 inches with areas of about 3 inches, with very clear gorgeous ice but a half inch of water atop, so clear you could sight fish. McGregor was fishable but the gap at the north dam was open considerably, but fishing near the launch more accessible. if this warm and dry wind keeps going for two more weeks as predicted I would recommend bringing a long rod just in case. if you are new to ice fishing, now is the time to see how ice forms and how odd it can be within yards.

Maybing he has a secret lake in the area and rather than naming that lake, he asks about the lake that people likely see everyday. Maybe he drives his snow mobile across the lake to his buddies house to play poker on friday nights.

I know "officially" that much ice should be able to hold pretty much anything on the road .... but it's always best to be reasonably cautious.

I have never been 100% comfortable driving on the ice. You just never know.

It was only 15" total in both spots we fished at yesterday. I felt safe driving on but 15" is about my minimum even though I driver a lighter suv.

heard ice wasn't thick due to high temperatures but I really don't think so, didn't make this weekend too cold

Just wondering if anyone has been out to Keho in the last couple days. I am thinking of heading out on Sat but have some kids so I am hoping to drive onto the ice. Is it drive-able yet?
