When I was younger and raising a family,I would fill the freezer every year with 1 moose 2 deer and 1/2 a pork. That lasted the 4 of us until the next hunting season.

What gives you the right to bash on the natives im sure there are a few on this forum and i for 1 don't appriciate your comments me and my family kill 1 moose for the year every year and we shoot the first one we see be it a bull or cow. Some of us don't abuse our rights and hurt the "publicly owned animals":mad3:

If you want to feed 8 for a year you're likely going to need more meat than you're going to kill. At least in our family we eat way more than a deer each per year.

You could do what I'm doing, at the end of hunting season see how full your freezers are and then order an appropriate amount of beef and pork.

thats what i was thinking too, my grandparents raise cattle so we usually get a couple of beef come butcher, my grandma fattens them up quite good too, if anyone needs a beef ask for details, shes the woman to go to. that being said a beef and a deer each is probably more than plenty

I wanna know where you're hunting if you're getting up to 150 pounds of meat off of a deer!!!

Seriously though, 8 people, 1/4 pound of meat per day per person, 365 days equals 730 lbs. Thats assuming you're eating it every day.

And they say the metis would not abuse the system if they were given full rights! Seems to me killin all those deer for everybody else would not be susitence hunting fo you and YOU'RE family it would be harvesting all that you could.

I have taken 3 deer this year. I have a family of 5. I am HOPING that it will last till next hunt season but am doubtful. We do mix up our food quite a bit, poultry, pork, fish, beef, and game. I am sure we will need to buy some beef to allow the game to make it to the next season, but since there is plenty in the freezer right now, it makes more sence to ME to buy the beef when the game is running low. Thats how I am going to go about it this year, next year I am hoping to be able to get an extra 1 or 2. whether it is a moose or a mule deer doesnt matter. I doubt moose as I hear it takes a few years to get that tag.

i dont want this to be a metis or indian topic, yes i am half cree, but i pay for my tags, i dont see how 3 deer for me and 3 for my brother is shooting up the woods, you make it sound like theres only 1 day in the season and we are taking 6 or 7 on that one day. we love the meat, whats the big deal?? answer the question whiskybaron: how many do you take a year?

There is absolutely nothing wrong with any hunter taking as many animals as the regulations allow, as long as they are making use of those animals. That's why the regs read the way that they do.

Some species and areas can withstand a lot of hunting pressure or the population needs to be reduced. Other species and areas - hunting pressure needs to be reduced or nil to allow animal populations to increase to sustainable levels.

You just have to ignore some of the silly comments on this site.

Good question i was thinking about it a while back. I think it would take quite a few deer. Not as much to them as you think. I boned my deer all out this year and was shocked. A deer that feild dressed almost 210 i ended up with 78lbs of bone and fat free meat.

I don't eat meat all that often, more like once or twice a week rather than every day, so a deer (or this year, a quarter elk) usually carries me through a year without too much trouble.

thats how i was raised, if you take an animal try and use all of it, i was also raised to share with my family, thats what my dad always did after he harvested his venisen, he would always give away a few chunks of meat to his parents and a few friends. the area that i will be hunting i think could use some hunting pressure, there are lots of complaints on deer and elk eating local ranchers feed and grain, as well as lots of fencing repairs and deer jumping out at people every night. i am a few selected hunters welcome to these peoples land as they all know me and my family very well. and have problems in the past with hunters shooting near their stock and houses.
