Flasher Fun

Wasnt seriously fishing, just went to a local small dink Perch slough to test drive one of my Ice-55 before i go after some trout on Sunday. I really enjoyed my playtime today. i kept the plastic strip to keep the face clean, im sure pics would have been clearer. Sorry if any are blurry

First off, i was getting very frustrated, wasnt reading bottom, every now and then blue slashes were freaking out, the digital depth was cruising from 0 - 200 trying to snag the bottom, fussed around with this for like 30 minutes. then it dawned on me......check the transducer cable connection BINGO!!!!!!

Now i was in business. i had drilled some holes from shore on out to deeper. playing from 10 feet to 22 ish feet. I was able to see a bare wire worm at 22 feet, i dont knwo if thats a good thing or not. But i was impressed.

Very cool to see perch come off the bottom and up to the jig and wire worms. played with the zoom, i understand that now, the back light is cool, i have 3 options of color, 2 (3) colors and 1 (6) color options. Still trying to understand gain, but i adjusted it so the line of my hook wasnt to thick, but yet didnt fade away when i moved it. Not sure if i was right on that yet, but i got all season to perfect it.

Memory card got filled quick as we forgot to empty it from the camera into the computer before the trip. But we managed some.

Yeah, flashers are awesome. I'm going into my 3rd season with the Vex FL18 and I love it. The sensitivity is amazing, like you said.

Last year at Gull I was hooking and landing perch that I never even felt hit just by watching the display.

The only time I've been frustrated is at a multi-species lake where I am constantly marking fish that show zero interest in my lure. For example, at Sylvan last March I was seeing fish every minute or two on the Vex, but they just cruised through. It was too dark for the camera, so I couldn't identify the species. I kept changing lures and presentations but nothing worked.

Finally, it was light enough to drop the cam down and see that it was whities, down at around 25 FOW. I wasn't after whites, so now I could ignore them, stick with a presentation a little longer and try to thump in a burb, pike or wallie.

Looks cool BB. I'm not afraid to admit I know nothing about them but are really interested. First year of hard water for me...never liked the cold as I worked in for so long but the wife loves it ....so....

The new bird looks pretty nice. I usually set the gain so that My lure is just showing, (green). Try to keep at a minimum as you will get lots of extra clutter if it is to high. This is a pic of my Marcum, the left side is in zoom mode the right side regular. The green line (lure) on the left side of the screen is 6" off the bottom. Bottom zoom is one of the most important features for seeing detail on a flasher IMO.

After today... i really got alot down on how this thing works. Mine has so many features. Its alot of fun. I dont think i could fish without it now. Amazing to see fish shoot up 7 feet to a lure and nail it!!!

Does anyone know of some websites that would help me get a better understanding on how these sonars work? I was thinking of buying one but all those colored bars are bit of a mystery to me.

Hey Dodger; If you don't mind one huge VEX commercial then ice fishing today has some great videos of the vex in action and the show extras go into great detail. I have a marcum but the flasher basics are the same. Check it out.

Glad I could help. Once you have fished with a flasher you will wonder how you ever did without one. Aside from sight fishing in shallow water; using a flasher will put more fish on the ice than almost any other tool or technique. If you want to try one out before you buy let me know and we can arrange to go out. I have the Marcum VX1 and love it. Might move up this year if prices come down a bit. Let me know if you want to go, I am chomping at the bit this year.

I was starting to sense that yesterday. Had the gain set up high at times and the lure itself would have a few colors in it. and i was picking up freshwater shrimp i think, all over the place. So really with the gain at a minimum for my lure, just enough so it picks up the lure....it will be more than enough for the fish. Life is good:D
