New Democratic Party Leader Jack Layton has urged the federal government to ban private ownership of semi-automatic rifles like those used in the 2006 shootings at Montreal's Dawson College.
Layton made the plea at the college Wednesday as he was being enthusiastically hosted by the college's Committee for Gun Control, which formed after Kimveer Gill killed a woman and injured 20 others last September.
"I'm here to urge [the government] to keep up the pressure for the reform of gun laws so that the kinds of guns that were used here would no longer be permitted," the NDP leader told a packed hall of students and staff.
Layton said Ottawa needs to bring about stiffer laws to restrict the importation of illegal firearms, as well as maintaining the federal gun registry.
His message resonated at the college, where many students attending the talk were on campus during the Sept. 13 shootings.
"I do believe [Layton] is strongly committed," said Stephanie Stevenson, a member of the Committee for Gun Control. "I have faith that he's going to work on these issues."
Stevenson said politicians should also make psychological testing a requirement in order to own a gun.

Why is it that these weasel's want to subject the rest of Canada to their points of view. The crime (s) were committed in quebec so punish the quebecers, not us law biding citizens! I would bet that it would not fly in quebec if mr layton said "all quebecers should be tested for mental stability before any ownership permits were issued, come to think of it, it wouldn't be such a bad idea for them to do that down there, seeing as they have had two mass murders down there committed by quebec citizens.
it just ruffles my feathers to hear politicians trying to gain political points at the expence of the rest of us law abiding canadians>: >: >: >: >: >: >: >: >: >: >: .
