Who's heading out on opening day? I am pumped to head out to slay some whites and perch! (Hopefully lol) I am already counting down the days! One question though, what do you guys use for Burbs there? Last year I had so many come by and just swim away, even when I had a jig and smelt down there. I am determined to catch one this year!

Kinda funny that I can't catch a Burb, most people have trouble with the whites and I figured em out right away last year. Gull is an awesome lake and I would love to say I caught every species there this year. (So far caught everything but a Burb and a walleye, seen em both though lol.

try a big ol' hunk of herring - 2" long. score the meat on the sides, soak it in anchovie paste overnight before heading out. If it stinks, they eat it

While fishing for whites or perch, ill have a rod rigged with a jig and minnow. Very often see burbs cruise by. Pull up your other hook... and drop the minnow down. They will usually turn around.

Hey Stryker, there was a couple posts on ice thickness in this thread, you could probably drive a sled on but I wouldn't know for sure as I don't have one.

I usually access the lake at brownlows, but will possibly be accessing it somewhere else on the 11th as you can't drive on yet, NOW a question for you guys lol, as I usually drive on at brownlows and access some of my hotspots from there, where can I access the lake and catch some whites within walking distance? Last year was my first year fishing the lake and I started at the end of January, heard its good this time in the season but don't really know where to start (is brownlows good to fish early season?) never caught much there later in the season.
Thanks for any replies,

NC

The north east side is good. Meridian beach I have always caught fish in that area. You need to get out about 500 metres and look for 20 foot depth. Hope that helps

Are burbs like pike in that they tend to clear out all the perch (and perhaps whites) when they're in the area?

Last year we used strips of farmed salmon, cut a 3/8"x4" strip with the skin still on one side so you can put a hook trough it and your will lucks might change...best use of farmed salmon, makes deadly burbot bait also pike walleye bait as well...

I'm hoping it's not.

Smaller crowds if they all have to walk. Hop on the quad or sled and enjoy.

The truth is there will likely be guys driving before then, and very it's likely we will have 12" by Christmas.
