Ice fishing East Pit Lake Rainbow Trout the other day was decent. Must have drilled 60 holes to find some that would mark fish. All fish were caught on a gold slender spoon. These fish were packed with large water beetles and other aquatic insects. They weren't full though because they were very aggressive on the MarCum and would charge in and not waste any time before grabbing the spoon. Had a great day out on the ice and if you give it a try I hope you do too! Watch out there was a little water on the ice but plenty of ice to walk on.

Congrats. Great pics, esp. that one that looks green. Very vivid colors.
Always love to see a report from East Pit in the winter, because I know how hard it is to walk down there and back with all your gear.

Yeah I walked all the way to the end... on the way back that steep slipery hill out was a killer. Be careful out there this weather has turned everything into a skating rink!

Brandon,

throw some ice creepers on. It will save a lot of misery for you. Pretty cheap too, about $10.00.

what size slender spoons work best around here ? 5/16 oz!

So I've bought a bunch of the 1/4 , 1/8, 1/16 Oz. The 1/4 are good for walleye and big perch if aggressive. The 1/8 Oz. Size is great all around size since I catch perch, whites, walleye and rainbow trout on it. I wouldn't even get the 5/16 same size as 1/8 but heavier. The fish really like the slow flutter of the 1/8. I watch on the Marcum and the fish will swim up 5 feet off the bottom to meet the slender spoon that is slowly falling down. I haven't used the 1/16 much yet but would probably work on the fussy perch and whites. But best bang for your buck are the 1/4 and 1/8.

Yeah I'm still young at heart and like to slide around... but they would help getting up that hill.

Hey, Brandon,

The 1/8 oz will be getting their second test at Miller's tomorrow. I'll be sure to let you know if they're effective or not. My SIL, SuperDave, doesn't have one but, it they're biting on SS, I'll give him one of mine to try. Lures cost more on the ice than at the store LOL!

Dytiscid beetles and a dragonfly nymph.

Careful of that ice. Water underneath could be just melt or if could indicate a weak spot nearby.
