We usually hunt west of the Brazeau Dam,in the Elk River country.Found over the last few years, too much clear cutting, oilfield activity, out of season hunting, etc etc.Success was dwindling, after 15 years and 4 or 5 bull elk we left our area and headed to the foothills. six point zones .Opening day found us in a foot of snow.Wasn't able to connect with the rifle but managed to get some zoom pictures with the camera.Saw at least two different herds with bulls and satellites bugling every few minutes. Two weeks later we were back with the snow now all but gone.Because it was now into October I was worried the rut was past but after still hunting around abit I had a responce to my call.Spotted a tan shape ,then antlers moving through the trees away across the ravine. My two sons and I made our way down and up as quickly as possible, keeping contact by bugling back and forth. All the while he was moving steadily away ,uphill. He busted us as we crossed a small meadow and high geared it way up and over the top. While the two boys were catching their breath I decided to take an off chance and loop around the crest of the hill.Double timing for about 300 yds I was pausing for a rest when I heard a branch crack up the hill.It was the bull moving through the scrub trees antlering the odd one on the way through.I knelt, readied my 30-06 on the opening which he was about to pass and placed 180 grains of Nosler partition behind his shoulder when he appeared 20 yds away.At this point his hooves started churning as he barreled downhill straight at me.I think, being mortally wounded he was acting instinctly and did not even see me but I actually had to dive out of the way.He piled up 10 ft below me on the hill.Talk about heart pounding, pant soiling excitement.Sure glad my two teenaged boys were along as we were in a non vehicle area.Took us 6 hrs to carry those quarters around the hill, down the ravine and up the other side.Won't ever forget this one and I know where I'll be on Sept 17
