If I'm jiggin flies should I bait the fly or not. If so what bait would you recommend. Or if you have a better set up than a fly let me know. I've never ice fished for whites before

Wetaskiwin Spoons in copper, brass or chartreuse without any bait added. Small brass/gold Cicada type lure. Jig by raising the lure 2-3" off bottom then letting it drop to bottom and repeat or raise the lure 12-24" off bottom and let it fall back to suspend 3 or 4" off bottom until it stops moving then wait about 5 seconds and repeat. Combine both techniques for best results.
Most hits will happen as you raise the lure off bottom or when it hangs suspended and almost still.

I like using flies ! Weighted so they sink ok , or use a dropped to get the fly down , slow fall and rise equals very few refusals

i highly recommend you carrying a variety of colours as i noticed every lake that has whitefish prefer different colours of say wire worms for example.

you know thats 2 different types of whites right? Rockies should take a fly pretty good, used to use royal coachmen or an orange fly in the Bow for them

I'm not a whitefish guy, but the guys I know that pound the whites dont worry too much about bait. Bait can get in the way of the hook set they say, but couldn't hurt to bring some maggots.

If a person was hung up on trying flies thru the ice for whites a weighted backswimmer would be a good fly to try.

One maggot if baiting.

Would love an ice report on Spray when you get back. I'm itching to get out there but work has me tied up until after Christmas....

For me, if you can find structure from 12 to 30 ft of water in Spray, nothing beats a fly tipped with a maggot for whites. Good Luck!!

Anyone ever get any whites through the ice at Calling? Ive tried the Wetaskiwins and wire worms but never had any luck except at Snipe. Need to keep trying new things I guess!

Sorry I can't make it out right away either. Just doing my research and tieing up some flies before I have time to get out
