View Full Version : Brownlows Report

Decided to try Gull/Brownlows today, Burbhunter667, Bwackwabbit & I departed Sylvan around 7:00 am, it was raining and ugly out, when we arrived there were already a number of vehicles parked & guys were dragging their gear out. Very few people parked out on the ice, however, that changed by early morning, the lake access area was one big parking lot.

We went to the right of the road, to an area we had a lot of success at last year. Started in 12 ft and ended up in 5 fow, we caught a bunch of Perch, some nice Whites had fun with a few Burbs & some Pike, although we never seen a walleye. Fish were semi-active in both depths, the bigger whites were cursing 2-3 feet below the ice. Fishin tip, Burbs really like pan fried shrimp on a jigging spoon. Brass, green & yellow W/W produced, and Jack (Jaw-Jacker) can catch monster Perch, too!

We had to produce our Fishin Licenses & had an interesting chat with a C/O who was testing our knowledge on possession limits of Gull Whites.

When we were loading up, Alberta Bigbore stopped to chat, his group did well, too. Nice fellow.

Plan on going back next week, here’s a few pics from today, Burbhunter667, Bwackwabbit may add a few …. enjoy.

Interesting, same CO was pulling over vehicles when I was leaving. Must be checking on catches.

Good day for me too. Left by 2 p.m. 2 whites, 4 perch kept. I did manage to land an over 5 lb walleye too. Lots of other fish caught.

Great job zip, you made out pretty good. I just returned from my first trip to Gull. 2 keeper perch and they were very tasty, iced a pike that was 65cm.The wife didn't set the hook good enough on a 8 to 10 pound pike, saw a real nice burb that wasn't interested, but only one whitefish all day. I was fishing in about 6ft think the camera might have spooked the whites away. Not a bad day, better than work!

One day hopefully I'll be just like you...lol. Yesterday at Gull I caught 9 perch and a burbot. Today tried new spots which didn't pan out well, 4 perch, but did finally manage to catch a whitey. Now I don't feel like they are an impossible fish, but still got some learning to do! Great pics and thread!

Bwackwabbitt & I went back out to the shallow bay on the right of the lake access road, it was a slow day, most Whites were very inactive, but managed to get my 3. Bwackwabbitt caught a gazillion Perch and had a big Pike on until it broke his 30 lb fluorocarbon leader ... he was some disappointed.

What worked today ....

First brass w/w & yellow bead - caught 1 White the Burb & couple Perch.

The second thin Brass w/w with gold bead caught the other 2 Whites, in 3 minutes or less, then nothing.

The 3rd one had the most interest but no takers, the last 2 had a few come straight it & turned at the last second & disappear. Tried a number of other colors none worked.

Some pics from our adventure, notice all the vehicles out on the ice, I measured a couple of different places, it's 13" or more. B.W. may update later. Were back on Sylvan tomorrow, looking for some monster pike.

Went out yesterday for the first time ever. Got skunked but it sounded like a bad day all around talking to folks.

What kind of motion do you give the wireworm? I had my horizontal and at all depths. Generally motionless. But I did try a few very light jigging patterns and some raising and dropping.

Bwackwabbitt & I were out on Friday, we both drove out on the ice & parked in 6 fow at approx 7:45 to watch another beauty sunrise. Drilled our holes got set up and it was still quite dark, had a hard time seeing anything down the hole.

I normally drill two 10" holes side-by-side and fish two rods with 2 w/w's tied approx 10-12" apart. About 25 minutes went by before I had a nice White come check out my copper w/w & yellow bead, the fish is about to inhale it and I could see it hit my 4 lb line first then turned & didn't come back. Another 1/2 hour goes by and one more White shows up, moves in on the same w/w, touches the line were the bead is not were the hook is and takes off. I sit there for another 1/2 hour and don't see another fish, time to move.

By this time the sun is up and we 15-20 groups among us on the ice & no one was catching fish. I moved to a spot a bit deeper in 7-8 fow, within 5 minutes or less had a football size Perch come in and stare at the same copper/yellow w/w, takes a swipe at it, hits the line not the hook and was gone, never to come back. Shortly after that, had the "Mother-of-all-Whites" come in and go after the same copper w/w, she hit the line end, didn't inhale the hook and was gone, this fish hung around for about 1 hour teasing me but wouldn't go after any of my w/w patterns again.

Time to move went back into the bay in 5 fow, seen 2 more Whites that weren't interested & the caught a small Perch that got sent back. Moved a couple more times and ended up going back to a previous spot were the monster White was hanging around. Spent the last 1.5 hours staring down the hole until a good size Pike showed up and wanted to eat my camera head, was able to get a pic, before he left. That was my day, 1 small 4" Perch.

Fishing Tip ... lesson learned today, the Whites were very spooky, few & far between, but a few would move in for a closer look & commit, they were going after the bead first on the w/w and when they hit the line they immediately backed off. I plan on making a new batch of w/w and these will all have the colored bead at the hook end. Something for you to consider, too!

Bwackwabbit has a few stories to share, he satisfied his addiction & got his Perch fix and then there was this monster Pike ... to be continued!

Were going back on Sunday to meet up with Jack&7, maybe we'll see you out, too! ... some pics from Friday!

Yes ... but have or had trouble trying to get them to stay horizontal otherwise Mr. White says no thanks.

Have only ever done it for trout. Was thinking trying fly with my wetaskiwin as sometimes the whites are swimming at different levels..

If I can keep it horizontal it'll be interesting to see what catches more.

Hey Ninja ... tks for the kudos, this was a new guy who just transfered in and was nervous agout the ice conditions, all-in-all a nice fellow.

Was wondering when you were going to join your buddy HeeHaw out on B-Lows ... if your thinkin about making a trip out in the next few days, we will be out there on Sunday & Monday & perhaps Tuesday ... let us know & I'll put a "Reserved" sign out for you on a decent piece of real estate next to us. Ice conditions are 13" plus were we fish, so you can drive out like most others.

Some weeds are ok if you have patches of sand either directly under you or in the immediate area.

Looks like you still had some fun on Buck, congrats!

Bwackwabbit & I departed Sylvan early, got out on the lake at 7:30 got set up and were fishin in about 7 fow, just before 8:00. We sat there for over an hour before we had 4 Whites drop in for a look, but wouldn’t commit. We gave up and moved at 9:30 to shallower water, seen a few more Whites, one came in was mouthing our w/w but wouldn’t inhale it, then disappeared.

The fish were few & far between this morning, we decided to try deeper water and found a spot we did very well at last March in 14 fow, we were on lots of Perch, but not all that large. After lunch we moved shallower again, got set up and within 5-6 minutes I had a large Pike staring at my jigging spoon/shrimp combo, the fish’s head was as big as my boot, after a few twitches, I lowered the spoon which spooked it & she was gone. After another hour we moved again, to even shallower water, within 5-6 minutes had a White come in, no hesitation & inhale my copper/yellow bead w/w. We sat there and didn’t see any other fish … it was time to go, on the way out it was above 0C, with light freezing rain & some serious wind.

Fishing Tip … lesson learned today was stay in shallow water if the fish are inactive, the odds are better, there will always be a few that will take advantage of a meal, as in the case of the only White we caught, have a look at what it had to eat today.

Some pics from today’s adventure.

The red worms are Chironomid worms - will grow up and hatch to become midges in the summer but are a prime fish food as is. They tend to be most common on muddy bottoms.

My truck weights just a little over 9000 lbs and with 12 inches of ice and another truck within 6 feet of mine and never had a problem with ice cracking. caught limits and most of them big ones. Three weeks ago I was on Pigeon and got some jumbo whites and back then there was 10 inches by Johnsonnia and saw 12 big whites and caught 5 with a brass ww with a red bubble by the curve of the hook.

SonnyCovin

Well don't use suffix line it won't tighten enough to keep the hook straight so tie a piece of 14 lb line to it and problem solved. I love 15 lb suffix because its great for ice fishing and it has a 6 lb dia. and great to work with I only use about 2 feet of 14 lb mono and it works. Tight lines.

haha that's awesome! that was me and my buddy with the argo. Im the one in the grey carhartt sweater. Caught a few decent pike along with a big old burbot that we ate for dinner. the Officer was a great guy. Talked with him for a while. Seemed to be a little more interested in the argo than our fish though haha.

Gull bound as well.... if all goes as planned we should be drilling by 0800. Think we will start to the right of the Brownlows launch... white Toyota tundra & 4 passenger flatfish.

My 5 year old daughter and I drove out for the afternoon. Arrived around noon and set up. She caught her first fish and her first limit of perch. Yes they were all small but when I threw one back I caught an earful. No harm in letting her keep a limit this time. On the drive home we discussed letting the babies go back and keeping the bigger ones. She was so proud to show her mom her catch and watched as I cleaned them up.

She had perch and chips for dinner and is already planning our next trip. She also mentioned that fishing was so good she didn't even get a chance to unpack all of her barbies!

I think I made her a few memmories. I know I did for me and I'm sure 1/2 of Brownlowes heard her too.

WOW! What a wonderful story! You sound like every little girl's dream dad! She's a very lucky little girl! Good for you both and I wish you many more great moments fishing together! :medium-smiley-035:

A group of us spent the day at Brownlows. Fishing in 15 to 17 FOW produced a fair result. Perch, Northerns, Burb and one walleye. No one was really trying for whites. Beautiful day... did not even deploy the tent, did it all old school.

Managed to get one fellow into some decent Perch action. He has been out a few times now with no luck but is sold now.

Perch ranged from 4" (hungry little ones) to 11". A couple Northerns in the 63cm plus catagory with one at 70cm and a couple of average sized Gull burbs.

Twist the eye of the wire worm 90 degrees with a pair of pliers and your wire worm will always sit right ....i think thats what your trying to accomplish ...always sitting horizontal

Heard that the good perch fishing was on the north end of Gull. Any truth to that? Have caught them at Brownlows but few and far between.

Anybody been out the few days? Have the whites turned on yet from slow to fair? Gonna be heading there when it warms up a little and sun comes out again.

Fished gull almost all day today. Started off the south point from brownlows early. Saw lots of fish on the camera. Walleye, burb and some small perch. Nothing would bite. Moved into the mass of huts area, saw a few small pike cruising around and only caught one all day. Cold, windy. Water seems to be clearing up but it just ain't happening for me on gull this year. Tried to drive on at Wilson's beach around 2pm but the heave prevents it all together. Then went to sylvan and fished 2 hours without a bite until sunset. The Rest of my winter will be east of calgary exploring.
