I've fished spray multiple times with great success but never tried in less than 40 fow. Anyone ever fish the shallows like less than 20 fow? Any success? Just curious if it's worth spending a day along the bank. Be nice not to hike out so far. Also if you're willing to share some knowledge on how to catch some other species other than lakers. That's all I've ever pulled out.

I've heard the theory that shallow there should be bigger lakers chasing whitefish, and couple times tried to start fishing shallow whitefish spot starting from the morning - never saw a laker on the camera.

Used to fish spray quite a bit ..... Lakers seemed to be pretty deep in there .... like 80+ feet.

The lakers there are deep. We walk about 200' from shore directly from the parking lot at driftwood where the dog sled's are howling and drop down.. Depth charts I see show 20m until you hit closer to the middle then it's 30/40m. Start heading south in the middle of the lake and she drops to 50/60m!

Ive caught them from 15-100fow... But usually 60-80 is best.

Only caught lakers in 50-65 feet down in about 80 feet of water.

I need a fix of later fishing. Bought some smelt today anticipating getting out.

We have caught lakers in Spray in the shallower water between 10 and 15 feet but it isn't the most productive. You will catch way more lakers in the deeper water in 80+ feet. You will be able to catch Rocky mountain whitefish in the shallows though.

Drop it to the bottom in 80-100 ft of water, and then reel it up a few (5-15) ft.

To answer your actual question yes it is worth while fishing close to the banks. For whitefish. But like any type of fishing success depends on where.

In the spring when the water is low I fish from the banks just to the left of driftwood boat launch, always get some. But once the summer comes around it's pretty hard to catch them. Although I have but not nearly as many as in the spring and really late fall just before ice up. Although I don't exactly know how deep it is I would guess when you cast out as far as you can it's around 25-30ft.
Wouldn't bother fishing that close on the ice though, as you can get out into deeper water without needing a boat (obviously LOL)
Another good place to fish during open water is at the end of the campground road, I hear it is up to 50ft within casting distance from shore, but if you walk past the gates I hear it gets really deep, although I have never done that.

Thanks. That's all I'm trying to figure out. I hear there are brook trout in there as well. Do you know if that's true

There are brookies in Spray. I have caught them in the outlet canal on a number of occasions.

Cool. Well I will have to give it a try for some different species out of the lake other than lakers
