Resource Development

If you have never been to Marie Lake Alberta before imagine a pristine mountain lake in the middle of the Alberta Parkland minus the mountains. You look down through 20ft of water and you can see the bottom of the lake. White sand beaches, thick forests, good fishing, great hunting, fantastic camping & swimming. An outdoors persons dream and a scarcity in Alberta.

I would make all outdoorsmen aware of the potential resource development that is planned to take place in and around the Marie Lake area. Two oil companies OSUM Corp. and Imperial Oil are planning two major SAGD operations. OSUM is planning build a plant, pipelines, and drill wells to extract oil from beneath Marie Lake. Imperial Oil is planning to build a plant(s), well pads, pipelines, and drill wells to extract oil from a huge lease area (Nabiye) just north of Marie Lake and East of May Lake. It is for certain that public land access, land use, air, water, forests, will grossly impacted and traffic, noise, and pollution will increase 100,000 fold with the go ahead of these planned projects. The first stage is that OSUM is going hire a Boyd Petrosearch to perform Air Gun 3D Seismic Testing on Marie Lake this spring. This seismic testing involves firing hundreds of thousands of 200 plus decibel sound waves from Airgun Boats from the lakes surface to the lake bottom to confirm if 2 billion barrels of oil sand exist 0.5km under the lake. This is planned to take place just after ice-off thru to July.

If you need a sample of what resource development looks like take a drive in and around or search google map using the satellite function to see what has already happened North of La Corey and or around the Bourque Lake area and you’ll be shocked of what SAGD oil operations will do to the air, water, forests, and land. I know that I was personally denied hunting access in and around these area’s just this past fall by upset Imperial Oil Operations representatives.

There is an organization that has been in place for years now that have been preparing for this day called the MLAWS (Marie Lake Air & Watershed Society) comprising of the landowners on and around Marie Lake. The MLAWS will fight to the grave to protect tand maintain the resource of Marie Lake. The only thing worth more than the oil in the ground is your vote. If you would like to know what our provincial or federal government’s commitment is to protecting the environment and or protecting the Marie Lake ecosystem (a Class 1 Watershed) I strongly urge everyone whether you’re a landowner of the area or outdoors person of Alberta we need to make a stand now. If Marie Lake development goes ahead what lake will be next. Cold Lake??? Winefred Lake??? Primrose Lake??? Pinehurst Lake??? Wolf Lake??? Spencer Lake??? Siebert Lake??? Heart Lake??? Lesser Slave Lake??? Sturgeon Lake???

Voice your opinions via letters, e-mail, phone, faxes, and even protest if you wish. I have provided some links for your knowledge and if you wish to relay your concerns. A few open houses have been held some with large attendance and absolute opposition. The story has made CTV news and I have been addressed by several government offices about my letters. Let your voice be heard.

Any oil company wishing to extract resources is unable to apply for any permitting until,

- Public open houses are held notifying the public of what they plan to do.

- They must provide 100% conclusive evidence of what they want to extract is actually there (Seismic testing, core drilling, etc).

This is all required prior to even talking to the Alberta EUB for permitting.

Step one took place over the last few weeks. Step two is the planned Seismic testing taking place in Spring 2007.

We really need to take a stand now, and we can. Any pressure to the government will make a difference because the environment is the biggest issue for political votes today. This is your opportunity to make things right.

The sad part about this whole thing is the Alberta Fish & Game held a recreation lease on the west side of Marie lake and tried over the years to put a winter & summer survial camp in to use but the Marie Lake society were against it and then got the lease taken away. Now it's the same spot were the oil company wants to put the plant, I guess us fish & gamers aren't so bad as neighbors.

But the Marie Lake Society is right and we have to try and stop this project because this tunnel idea of going underneith lakes in Alberta is dangerous. We have to let our goverment know that our lakes are precious resource and not to be mess with.
