I am going out today, first time this year....how much avg., thinking about using hand auger ?

Depends on the area of the province you are from and the lake you are going to fish. Without having that on your tag or telling us ...... the best we can all do is let you know what the conditions are in our area.

Up around Edmonton there 18"-20" of ice at the average lake. This week has been warm so there might be some slush and crusty flood water on many lakes but I would imagine the thickness remains pretty steady.

You are going to get your exercise with that hand auger .....
