Anyone try this? I was working on my auger this weekend and drilled a couple holes in my pond bringing up lots of them. Wondered if they might work, providing they are legal.

If your pond is full of shrimp you may want to look into stocking it!

I'd love to, nothing but shrimp and leeches by the bucketful in there!

Worth experimenting, I once used a whole 12" staghorn sculpin as bait on Wab :scared0018:

Save the fresh and go fishing. Best perch bait in the world!!
If you freeze them they turn brown and mushy

almost impossible to keep them on the hook, especially if they've been frozen

In that case I'll pick em up off the ice and see if I can keep them alive in a bucket or something.

could try salting them for preservation, or store them in a light oil infused with garlic...

For trout also. They are not durable so use small hooks

Like someone else said, This would be a great natural place to raise trout

I've considered it, I just wish there were options besides trout. They are kinda my least favorite fish, would rather have perch or something in there but I guess it would be better than nothing. I'll have to find out where to get some.

Arctic char are legal to stock in Alberta. they're better table fare then rainbows.

Honestly...one very slow day at jackfish not too long ago I was dared to eat one...I figured it would taste better if it was cooked so a 15 second seare on the heater and out came a bright orange freshwater shrimp...took a bit to actually put it in my mouth but it tasted exactly like shrimp...and since we could catch dozens from each hole onto the heater they went and my new favourite meal for on the lake is freshwater shrimp and lays potato chips...don't judge...I know you have secrets too

Was not aware of that, very interesting. Do they survive well in a dugout type environment?

Just make sure that you're eating them from a clean water source. Crustaceans tend to retain and thus concentrate toxins from pollution in water.
A buddy and I thought we'd play Tom Sawyer and boiled up a few crayfish from a questionable water source. He ended up having his stomach pumped in hospital, while I was very ill for a couple of days. Lesson learned!
Scrumptchy going down - not so good coming back up!
