My charger fried and I would like to get a new one. I looked around town and I can't find one with the exact same input/output stats as the old charger.. I am illiterate when it comes to stuff like this. Can I buy a different type of charger?

The side of the battery states:

For standby use:

Voltage regulation: 13.5-13.8V
Initial current: No limit

For cycle use:

Voltage regulation: 14.4-15V
Initial current: 2.1A max

The battery is a Shimastu NP 7-12, 12V7Ah valve regulated lead-acid battery

Anyone have any ideas on what kind of charger I need?

Try looking it up on eBay. Do the search and see what comes up. I was able to find a charger for my camera for the 1/2 price what it costs here.

Not sure if it's the same but I got one for mine at wholesale. My next stop would be battery world.

I use a Battery Tender Jr. to charge mine. Works really well. Can be left charging indefinitely without worry, and has an indicator light to tell you it's done charging. About $40 at Canadian tire.

I am now worried that the old charger wasn't the proper one. It fried, which I assume is a bad sign. Also, it had alligator clips on it, which I think were added later. I got the camera second hand, so I don't know if it's the original charger.

Was it specific for your battery?

Battery world would be a good idea, I could just bring it in and see what they recommend.

The charger with mine also had alligator clips you just have to make sure the milliamps are the same, and volts are same..which are listed on batt...

Just a couple of chargers..

There are no milliamps listed on the battery. The old charger had:

Output DC 12V 850mA

Is that the just rate of charging? Would one listed with a lower mA cause problems??

I replaced my charger a month ago. Got a velexar charger from cabellas. Check Battery world.

Amazon?

Amazon quick search (http://www.amazon.ca/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=NP+7-12+charger&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3ANP+7-12+charger)

I bought 2 spare heavy duty batteries and a charger for my new cam-corder for less than a 1/3 of what a camera store wanted for one battery.

Yes it might ..... in general, using the same technology, the larger the battery the larger the mAh ..... think of the charge it holds as marbles in a box .... you have to be able to shake up every marble in order to charge every marble.

A charger should be able to "shake up the marbles" enough to give the battery enough of a deep charge. Using a lower output charger might stir up only the top 2/3 of the battery causing only 2/3rd of the battery itself to charge. If the battery isn't used right away .... the charge will evenly disperse .... and you end up with 50% of the power you put into it.

This will cause memory and eventually it will charge and hold less and less each time.

This is the most common issue you can have.

The best charger to buy is a conditioning charger - which starts out as a "big powerful charge" to stir up all the marbles then tops up each marble slowly to ensure a good and deep charge. This is concept can be covered in another class .... lol ....:)

Interesting, thanks for the explanation.

Careful when charging the battery for your underwater camera.
I learned the hard way that you have to take your camera OUT OF THE WATER before plugging it in and charging it.
I was shocked to learn this.

NOCO Genius G1100 Smart Battery Charger

Product #11-1926-6

This is the smart charger that I purchased from Canadian Tire a few years ago. I have used it on a car battery and on my atv battery. About the same as a battery tender but has a few more functions and is 1.1 amp which is slightly more than the charger you did have.

Actually the higher amp or mA the quicker the charge. A slower charge is generally better for battery life.

I have Marcum(3 different types), AV, Vexilar, Lowrance chargers ranging from 500 mA to 1.2 amp. They can be used on each others batteries with no issues.
I use them to charge 3.6, 5, 7, 8, 9 amp hour batteries.
