A good resource on wood species I have used:
http://www.wood-database.com/lumber-identification/softwoods/eastern-white-pine/
http://www.wood-database.com/lumber-identification/softwoods/western-white-pine/
In a nutshell, the western white pine is heavier, denser, stronger, but it shrinks a lot more.
As far as telling them apart, that is a tough one, but the Eastern generally has a tighter more distinct grain. Color is about the same.

Western are slimmer. Eastern tend to have much thicker trunks, higher and wider canopies also. Generally a much bigger mature tree.

Thanks guys
I need to tell clippings apart in a lab, it's freakin hard. Cones on the Western are bigger but there's sort of an overlap area in the size where a cone could have come from either one....
