Remember a while back in Calgary when this took place, and earlier when some fleet trucks had about 100 stolen?

CALGARY — Calgary police Staff-Sgt. Brad Moore said 237 batteries were taken from 79 school buses sometime between 2 p.m. on Sunday and 5:30 a.m. Monday.

http://www.thestar.com/news/canada/2014/12/09/students_left_waiting_after_237_school_bus_batteri es_stolen_in_calgary.html

Now those are big heavy batteries and there could be many uses for the thieves.

What if one of those reasons was a dirty bomb utilizing the battery acid, hcl?

Then we have ex-military bomb expert arrested in Ottawa, formerly from Seattle area living now in Nova Scotia. He had in his possession tetroxide. Where was he going? To Calgary?

http://globalnews.ca/news/1786793/christopher-phillips-had-osmium-tetroxide-threatened-police-court-docs/

I'm sure RCMP have put these two possibilities together.

If you know how, you can make a dirty bomb with hcl and tetroxide which would make a deadly chlorine gas bomb.

Did we arrest a guy on his way to create a situation in Alberta/Canada?

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/ottawa-police-evacuate-hotel-cite-possible-threat/article22548188/

who knows, sure went quiet fast.

Maybe some online hand loader is buying hot batteries to acquire raw lead for making CowBoy Action shooting ammo,,, ?

Yeah, now that you mention it, I have not heard any thing else about those incidents. My first thought was the sulfuric acid could be used for detonators or acid attacks once it was cooked down. But you mention hydro chloric ? acid, I didn't know it was used in truck batteries.

That IS huge $8 buck$ ! ! , try to get rid of automotive used batteries in Northern BC and your lucky to find a place give you $ 2 each,,,,

a school bus battery isn't light, highway signs are light. 239 batteries stolen in 6 hours was not some quick-off theft.

could be going to a grow-op.

but it could also be for a well financed fellow with expensive catalyst.

Me thinks any recycler would cock an eyebrow though if some one would bring in a quantity like that.

As far as the acid goes that's an awful lot of work to go thru, much easier ways to get a volume of battery acid.

it is a lot of work, mucho grande heavy work, many creeky backs and moaning, a risk greater than a reward. so what are your thoughts on a need for 239 school bus plus 100 fleet truck batteries?

how many trucks showed up for the theft, or was it a big cube truck?

how many people does it take to remove and stack 239 large batteries? who would risk their larger vehicle in such an operation? it wasn't exactly small cubes of aluminum?

I don't think you are wrong and I apologize if I offended you in any way. And yes HCL is an acid. I wasn't sure if you meant hydro chloric, hence the question mark. It is apparently very nasty, but I am no chemist, so I assumed that maybe heavy truck batteries are different from my car battery.

I once boosted a short bus and it had 2, maybe the big ones can hold 4 or some such.

no offense taken.

acid plus osmium tetroxide should only be mixed by a pro. if that's what the batteries were stolen for. just a theory.

the guys stealing the batteries were fit.

239 x 80 lbs = 19120 lbs or 9.56 tons

assuming they had to move the batteries 25 feet = 5975 feet

5975 feet is 1.132 miles

Batteries are $0.25 - $0.50/lb for recycling.

One can get big dollars recycling batteries..

The average vehicle battery you can get about $8.00.

$8.00 X 237 = $1896.00

It is not that hard to make HCL from household items...

Nothing by fear mongering by the RCMP.

$1896 divided by how many thieves?

Large battery theft is nothing new...

It is happening in Vancouver and other major cities. It happened in the 80's and 90's

I am not sure why there is the need for 237 batteries..

Maybe they will sell them on kijiji for cheap or half the price of new to clear them?

I really doubt people stole 237 batteries to go and blow stuff up.

If you are looking at 80lbs per battery then that is an easy $4,740.00 @ $0.25 /lb.

Just a thought on practicality of stealing and disposing of 239 batteries. A deep cycle bus battery will weigh in excess of 100lbs. Probably more likely 130lbs. That is about 30,000 lbs - not something you are putting in the back of a pick up truck.

exactly, and crackheads aren't guys/gals used to doing bench press of 100 lbs let alone 80. so from a business standpoint after the guy gets his cut on using his big rig for hauling, how much money are the labourers raking in. seems like a huge undertaking and risk for such little return.

high end grow-op more than likely.

Yep believe so wired in series and parallel. Two sixes wired to make twelve and then the two twelves to 24 same as a semi. Sure looks like inside job not many people know that yard isn't monitored well and their truck had to parked in front of the buses. Who's gonna pack those big suckers back n forth in the dark. Cordless drill or sawzall and they are disconnected in about ten seconds. Probably put them in a container and shipped them overseas along with all the used tires stolen from my shop. Lol hate thieves!!!!

Good possibility. I got no doubt that they're pretty torqy to pack that many batteries.
