If I had the computer skills I would post a link that you can find if you google ice fishing. I think it was in Minnesota where they had an ice fishing derby for charity. If I remember correctly 11,000 anglers came out which I find amassing. There is a video shot from the air and the area the derby was held in looks like a giant pegboard, they drilled so many holes.
If you get a chance check it out on google.

Wow. Looks like a great event. And the fish caught - fishermen fishing ratio is quite low. Yet the turnout is astounding. All for charity! My faith in mankind restored:sHa_shakeshout:

Thanx for the thread WN and thanx for the link FT. A site to explore indeed. I just learned about the rare goblin shark. Freakadelic! So neat.

Can't remember the exact number of participants, but the Orillia Perch festival in Ontario has a huge number of participants.

Think about it. 11000 people catch 2 - 4 fish each. Even if it was catch and release, how many mortality rate? Thats like Gull lake for a whole winter, in one day. At least the lake is airerated now.

I think the article said just over 1,000 fish were caught so that is only 1 fish for every 10 participants. The holes were drilled by the organizers so only a very limited part of the lake was used and the time limit of 3 hours also limited the effect on the population. This is also not to mention that they generally have a month of less ice cover down there so winter kills etc are not nearly the factor they are here.

Don't think I would like to see an 11,000 participant derby on my local lake though.
