He's is stumped, as I am about what made them.

He found them on his trapline.

He could'nt remember his password to log in otherwise he would have given his account on spacing etc.

I'm sure he'll add his two bits shortly.

Where were these tracks made. I would be suspicious that they might be Otter, Fisher or Pine Martin.

Not all that far from water, since I know the rough geographic area that the trap line is on.

I also know that otter's are common on the water the trap line is close to.

I think we should wait for Backwoods to give some specifics.

Hard to tell the size but if they are about 2 inches long I would say muskrat they are way to pointed for martin ,fisher

Look at the start, that is a Maglite flashlight that takes AA batteries, (about 6" long)

Raccoon.

The snow looks like it is melting but I don't see any sign of tail dragging for an otter. Since there is overlap with the tracks I would almost guess wolverine as they are larger in the 5-6" range (If the flashlight is that size and the snow melt hasn't enlarged the track too much). Plus the 5th toe is not/hardly showing.
I can't watch the video from this computer but I will check when I get home.

dont wolverines leave tracks like a small bear? and they dont have long toes like that so , it leaves out martens and fishers too.

Looks like a wolf track to me. Longish looking toes though. With water nearby, maybe the dog accidentally took a swim and there ended up being balls of ice/snow frozen between and under his toes? Looks like there is alot of fresh wolf sign around. In that light, maybe an old one thats had its azz kicked out or maybe a pup stud dog, and no time to stop and bite the ice balls out yet, track looks to be moving pretty quick...????

If you look at the end of the vid you'll see wolf tracks.
Doubt that either.

Its dog for sure, and probuably a wolf. Another possibility, and very likely would explain the long toes.....
My Blue Heeler dog cut its back left leg as a pup. The cut was right at the back of the leg about 4 inches above the paw. The object that cut her also severed the tendon that runs down and controls the paw from the bottom side. Im not a vet so cant go into detail here. End result though is the normal paws stand up nicely and the toes are nice and springy and tucked up nicely, like normal. The bad paw has permanently relaxed, is flat and the toes splay foreward. If you would like to see photos i could take afew and post them, but i think it makes sence as typed. Could be that its a wolf that has sustained an injury of some sort. Maybe got hamstringed by another wolf??? They are aggresive dogs... Sure appears to be a wolf track, everything is there and in the right place except the toes.

:lol:Another reason the toes would appear elongated and splayed might be because its moving at a higher rate of speed than a walk! Sometimes its easy to miss the blatantly obvious.

Must be one heck of a coon, 6" long track, and some pretty long spacing.

Seen a million racoon tracks and shot racoons. If thats a racoon hes in a completely different league than any other coon thats layin down track in this province.

On closer examination, I'm thinking otter , they don't always leave a tail drag, especially when they are "on the move" big time!:)
They also have the curious " two pads together" looking track of the weasel family, for those that are not aware....

X2 as I have not seen the Chupacabra since I was killed by one in Central America in the late 70's this was in spite of warnings from the local villagers  If its a Racoon its big enough to eat a Chupacabra fer sure:evilgrin:

Nope your wrong, Dick's feet are much longer than that, although the toenails look about that long:lol:

i think its the back feet of an otter.

KJP

I would bet a wolf 100%. The track looks displaced because it was most likely running, the foot then slides a little elongating the toes. The tracks going in the opposite direction are easy to tell as a wolf. The only difference is the gate. Look at the stride length as well. That would rule out wolverine and most other critters mentioned.

Just by 2 bits

I came across the same type of track on my line this saturday and then after following it down the trail for a couple of miles found a mule doe carcass that wasn't there a couple days before so............. I'm voting for the Wolf with a bad foot. Wow do they leave a mess or what?

Sorry, but still no definite ID on these tracks. Some of you are way off in left field. 6 inches long, heavier than wolf, 32" stride. Any more guesses.

Well after reading about coons in another thread. Didn't think them varmits were so wide spread in Alberta. So gonna say coon.

DairyMan7
02-12-2009, 02:17 PM
otters, beavers, fisher, there are all bounders and dont walk like a cat or a dog......so the melted track who knows.....snow melt makes track look bigger and something they are not, but the other track is a dog.....don't know where this is in alberta so could not say if it was a wolf of not...but it is a dog
the melted could be some sort of a bounder....who just a well used coyote trail

DairyMan7

you would see a thumb.............and I have never seen a coon track 6inches long........that would mean the coon would be the size of a bear...
