Just thought I would throw this out there. Just got back from Cuba. Brought 1 box of Monte Cristo, 1 box MC open and 1 box Coheba cigars. I don't smoke but would like to try one. We have Cuban friends and went to visit them. I'm told by my friend they are the real cigars not imitations. Anyway if you smoke cigars you know what they are worth and I won't be greedy at all. Just thought I could end up doing someone a nice favor.

If the brand marked is "Coheba" they might be cuban but they are not the "Cohiba" brand most cigar guys are looking for. You also want to find out what specific cigar they are ..... saying Cohiba is like saying Ford ..... what kind makes a difference in price ..... big time.

There should be a label on the box. They are also, and unfortunately, the most counterfeited cigars out there. A couple close up pictures of the box, the stamp, would help determine value. Typical and Common Cohiba's would range from $300-$500 a box. Some varieties could be worth a lot more.

One easy thing is .... if the box is plywood or cedar veneered plywood..... it's fake.

Snap a couple pics of the box.

If my locker wasn't full of cohiba already I'd take you up on that offer. In regards to resale it depends what you have? I have a box of cohiba limited edition 2006 that are worth $150 per cigar others like the behike 56 are about $85 per cigar. All depends but in the mean time you should have them in a humidor because if they dry up anyone who knows there cigars wouldn't want them.

Ok here is what's have
Montecristo open. Cedar box 25 cigars
Montecristo no.4. Wood b ox smells like cedar 25 cigars
Chiba Esplendidos. Pretty sure box is cedar or mahogany I really am not sure. There is a small wood panel in the box as well. Box has a small steel snap to lock the box. If you want a pic pm me a cell number. I tried adding pics on here before but it is a pain in the butt.

Put those Esplendidos in a Humidor.

They sell for between $650-$850 a box.

Take care of those and get them protected - once they dry out they are worth nothing other than as a novelty display item for the fancy box. You might get $10 for the box at that point.

The Montecristos No4 are relatively cheap cigars - maybe $150-$200 box.

Here's an article to help tell if they are real or not:

Go to zigarren, there's a very nice Asian man that would be happy to help you out and if your not sure on what particular cigar to pick let him guide you, oh and make sure you don't touch! He doesn't like that. As for humidity control get the cigar oasis and you will never have any problems. When your humidity fliters need replacement simply bust the canaster open, chuck that green foam crap out, head down to craft store and grab some of those little hydro beads and fill the canaster plumb full but not enough so they are popping out the holes. Theres really only one cigar that is worth smoking and that is COHIBA

A few questions
Did you buy the cigars at a Cuban government store?
Did you pay between 30-60% of what the people here are telling you they are worth?
If the answer is no to any of these questions they are most likely not the real thing

I smoke my fair share of cigars and for the most part stay away from Cubans because they are counterfitted so much

If they are real you'll make some $$$
If they are not you can still sell them and not be out anything most counterfit Cubans still sell for between 3-10 $ each

The Cuban Government controls the cigar exports very tightly. Each box has numerous stamps/stickers so as to control export. That being said each worker in the factory gets 1 cigar a day as well as pay so it is not unknown for a bunch of workers to pool the cigars and sell them to a tourist.$300 in foreign currency goes a long way in Cuba and even moreso for locals.

Yes if you go to Cuba you can bring back cigars duty free but they are definately not cheap to buy in Cuba.Cuban cigars are considered the finest in the world and command a premium price...hell there was a Seinfeld episode with Kramer getting premo rounds of golf at exclusive New York golf courses because he was giving the Pro a Cuban cigar to play and it all ended up with Kramer going to the Cuban Consolate asking about getting cigars and then he winds up playing golf with the Consulate staff....it began with the line of "where did you get this jacket?...Is it Kashmere?"

On the juxtaposition if you are vacationing in the Dominican Republic and you get a "wicked deal" on a box of cigars on the beach you are 100% buying garbage that you find out after you light one up.

I myself cant justify paying $150 for a cigar or even more than $20 actually.

That's a fair price for esplendidos..and even if they are fake cohiba! May not always be the case for some fakes but the fakes I've tried you wouldn't even know except for the jacket print was a knock off. If you can still find it (I got a case) I'd recommend a glass of cabin fever maple whisky for the esplendido it really brings the leather and coffee flavor out in this one and once you get a third of the way through you should notice I light nutty flavor. Damn I'm going for one, I'm all worked up now! HA!

Montecristo Open Eagle (most expensive of the Open line)=$200/box

Montecristo Open Junior (least expensive of the Open line)=$90/box

Montecristo #4= $140/box

Cohiba Esplendidos= $575/box

These are Cuban prices. Canadian dollar, if you went recently would be worth approximately .77¢.
You didn't specify which Open cigar you had so I listed both to give you an idea.

The jist of it is, if you didn't spend at least $900 Cdn. they are all, or almost all, fake.
For someone who knows little about cigars I doubt you spent that, but I could be wrong.
Retail price here in Canada is approximately triple the Cuban price.

If you bought them at any place other than a cigar factory, resort shop or a 'Casa del Habbana' store, they are fake.
I will almost guarantee the Cohibas are fake as the Esplendidos are the most copied cigar in the world, not just Cuba.

There will be a serial # on each box. Simply punch that # into this web site and you'll have all the answers you need. http://www.habanos.com/Sellos/Info/VerificaSelloCajon

If they are fake that doesn't mean they're awful, just that they cannot command the price of authentic. Usually 1/10th to 1/5th the cost is the norm.

I have had more fly-by sellers of fake cigars PM me on this site than anywhere else.
Not saying the OP is one of them, but something everyone should keep in mind.

Fake Esplendidos of the most superior construction sell for $75-$100/box in Cuba.

I like your taste in liquids though, I also prefer something on the sweet side with my stronger cigars.

If you post a pic of the box and jacket on the cigar I could tell you if they were fake. The worst fakes I've seen yet came from the Dominican . A guy I used to work with brought back four boxes 2 on him and 2 on his wife and man did he get burned bad I took one look and I was like ...yyaa you've got a banana leaf rolled in floor trimmings there. They had the worst fake cohiba jacket I've ever seen. And the smell was horrendous!

EZM

Post a pic of the box, hinge, inside of the clasp, label with serial # and liner ...... the jackets/rings are hard to tell and getting better.

If they are real $450 is a good deal. I've seem them in stores here for over $1000 a box.

As another contributor said, if you didn't pay more than $300-$400 a box, they are likely copies.

Sometimes copies find their way into authentic boxes, but the empty boxes are worth quite a bit more in Cuba than you would expect. That's why the serial number is important, if it's a couple years old ..... it's a re-package job with copies.

Unless they were purchased with the proper paperwork and from a licensed seller ... I would be cautious.

Folks I would love to post pics but to be honest I've tried many times before and like a lot of others the pics just won't attach. I've read the instructions but it requires setting up yet another account on some photo site and to be honest I don't have enough patience to go through with that. So in saying that I have pics on my phone so if possible I can text them to anyone. As for the cigars like I said earlier I really have no idea if they r fakes. I can only trust a close friend who lives in Cardenas Cuba for the last 8 years where I bought the cigars. I was told they are the real thing they r just not acquired in the way they should have been. Anyway I will be in Red. Deer in a few hours then Calgary for the rest of the week if anyone wants to see them or buy some. I really don't care if they sell or if I just meet people here and smoke one on the ice or on a patio somewhere. Either way it is and was just an offer to AO people only.

I have worked and lived in Cuba and have been married to a Cuban for the last 13 years. We visit every year and I buy and smoke both real and fakes. If your boxes do not have a variation of this type of stamp on the bottom ("EEO CCUA" the Cuban manufacturing code) they are fake. If they are fake the Esplendidos are worth $75 Canadian, the Opens are worth about $60 and the #4's are worth about $40. I find many fakes that are very good smokes but they are still fakes and not worth the price of store bought.
Here is a link to deciphering the codes

Cohibas - They look legit to me ........ foil on the printing is good, clasp on box is good, can't be 100% sure ...... but looks promising from the picture I see, nothing indicates counterfeit.

Again without the date and factory code stamped on the bottom of the box they are fake. No two ways a bout it. The bands on the Esplendidos are definitely fake not even close. The Open masters only come in a 5X50 but they look the same size as you Esplendidos which only come in a 7X47. Also the Cohiba clasp is inferior to the real clasp. Your cigars are not legit but I would wager that 1/2 of them smoke better than any $10 cigar you will buy here.

Spot on, minus the comment about the fakes. I would rather smoke the cheapest cigar I could afford rolled by a reputable roller or factory, than a knock-off rolled by some one who knows you're leaving the country.

I don't know how, with as good of printers as are available, why they just can't seem to keep the checkers consistent on the Cohibas. Dead giveaway.
