Wood and preservative combos for pergola

Hello everyone,

I will be building a pergola this year for our south facing patio and I was wondering if anyone has any input on what wood and preservative combinations would be suggested? I`m not crazy about the standard green pressure treated finish for the readily available deck and fence lumber, but I do like the idea of its cost and longevity. There seems to be a ton of information about using cedar out there but for every advocate there seems to be just as many folks questioning the overall longevity.

I've built them with both, as well as reused fir that was already in use for nearly 100 years.

Pressure treated is good for pricing, Cedar or fir is nice for 'au naturel' finish, but any of them can be any color you want with paint or stain.
