Never, you did what was needed. That is why they give all their love, cause they know you will do whats right for them. It's fresh, it hurts and will for a while. That's normal. It will get better. My parents dog kissed me on the nose when the sleep drug went in. That was almost 20 yrs ago. You reminded me of it with your dog licking your hand. Take care.

Condolences TC, RIP Mojo.

Your never really get over the loss of a loved one. I was the first thing my Jaeger saw when he opened up his eyes, and nearly 14yrs later I was the last thing he saw when he finally closed them for the last time. The loss never goes away...
Memories are a good thing, I'm sure Mojo will not be forgotten in your heart.

TC You did the right thing...I know it is a hard decision to make as I have had to do the same thing with a few of my best dog friends over the years and everyone of them was just as hard to let go. That lick Mojo gave you was his way of saying Thanks for the great life and to let you know he will be fine and so shall you and your family...The memories you have will last forever but the pain you have right now will slowly fade away...my heart is with you today.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Thanks to everyone for their thoughts. I have read the rainbow bridge in the past and appreciated it, but today it is so much different to read. Thanks for posting it up SportHunting. I just got off the phone with my daughter, and had a good family cry over saying goodbye to our good dog. Was a rough day, but it's going to be ok. I hung my guy's collar and tags from the mirror of my van with a little of his fur still stuck and hanging off it, and the good memories are going to carry me right on through. I know I did what was best for him.

I am sorry for you loss, it has been many years since my childhood dog passed on and that poem brought tears to my eyes. He was an awesome dog and the day he was put down I was in camp. I was out having a smoke before breakfast and a red fox that hung around the camp came right up to my feet and sat with me for about 10 minutes till i went to the cook shack. I received an email an hour later from my father telling me the news.

Terrible thing about dogs is their life span. Went through the same thing with a gf's dog I had only known a little over a year. Was not easy, there's just something about dogs.

Never feel guilty about doing what needs to be done. Ultimately you are the BEST person to make that call, and your dog appreciated it I'm sure. I have seen a few dogs that were left clinging to life (and some people I might add), that were clearly suffering. At some point you have to place the quality of time on earth, ahead of the quantity. Dogs can be pretty stoic, and I think we don't always understand the level of pain they may be in. When we perceive their pain, I'm sure it's manifold greater than what we think.

You made the right choice and you have my condolences.

If it should be that I grow weak,
And pain should keep me from my sleep
Then you must do what must be done,
For this last battle cannot be won.

You will be sad, I understand;
Don't let your grief then stay your hand,
For this day more than all the rest,
Your love for me must stand the test.

We've had so many happy years,
What is to come can hold no fears,
You'd not want me to suffer so,
The time has come, please let me go.

Take me where my need they'll tend,
And please stay with me until the end,
Hold me firm and speak to me,
Until my eyes no longer see.

I know in time that you will see,
The kindness that you did for me,
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I've been saved.

Please do not grieve, it must be you,
Who had this painful thing to do,
We've been so close, we two, these years,
Don't let you heart hold back its tears.

Sorry for your loss as well. I had to put our little guy down a few years ago, it was the hardest thing I had to do. I cried many a days and when my wife would cry, well the flood gates opened up. Sorry to hear. We had to put our white German Shepard of 13 years down on Valentine's day. She had a huge mass blocking her urine track. Again, thanks everyone for their kind words. I'm doing ok, just a lot emptier around here.

My girls were really going through it, particularly the youngest, and my wife was surprised by how lonely she was. They conspired (at my wife's maneuvering), and found a puppy. I let them have their way. We picked him up yesterday, and while he is a cute little fellow and I'm letting the girls smother him, and I'm just keeping my distance. Not ready for him yet. But he keeps following me. He's a little Chihuahua/maltese cross, the size of a biscuit at the moment. Anyway, my youngest is much better having him, and that is what matters. I'll give it a while, then I know I'm going to go find my next best buddy. Maybe this summer.

You may have already found one of your next best buddies or he is finding you :) My wife surprised us with a long hair chihuahua a few years ago. Not a fan of the hair and already had 2 GSP's at the time so she made it 3 dogs in the house. The little bugger grows on ya despite ignoring it lol. Take care.

It's not easy bringing another dog in soon after one dies. When Tia died, it hit me harder than anyone else.

A week after she died, one of the ex's coworkers told her he had a bichon that needed a home. Great, just what I needed. The girls freaked out when he was brought in the house, but I wanted nothing to do with him - felt like a frigging traitor to Tia. That little bugger knew that I had something against him, snuggled every chance he got and managed to worm his way into my good graces.

Give it time...
