Word has it Travers and PCR already have open water. I would like to think that Ghost should too. I am planning to break out my boat this weekend at Ghost, can anyone confirm that the ice is off?

Stopped by Ghost yesterday aft. About 2ft. of open water by the shore.

Ghost is never ice free before late april early may at the best of times.

Looks like pcr is where you are gonna have to try the boat out.

Don't forget to check the REG's before you drop a line.

I think Ghost might be closed till May, now... IIRC

Hi John - If you guys are referring to Ghost Reservoir west of Calgary - it is open year round.

Should have been more clear. Ghost reservoir by cochrane.

Just thought with the strong winds and unusual weather we've been having that ghost would be clear. Guess I'll have to suffer through this dry spell of a month :/

Wasnt quite thawed last saturday at Barrier. We hiked the trail around behind it. The ice looked paper thin form shore so it might be thawed now. Im itching to get the boat out as well. :waiting4:

would there be enough water to launch a trailered boat this time of year??

Ice looking paper thin from shore can be an illusion of sorts. I would think the ice is still plenty thick enough to cause some problems for any boat.

Best to stick to the for sure open water, Chain, and some of the south lakes.

Well looks like its gonna be a few degrees under zero for easter so it will delay the melting :waiting4:

since the lakes are melted, i wonder when they're stocking the k country/canmore ponds this year?

most stocked ponds in alberta will be stocked just prior to the may long weekend. if weather permits they start the stocking a bit earlier as i found out last year.

I would like to know as well, I think the ice should be off Ghost a lot earlier this year than most. I am itching to get the boat wet as well, should be ice free at ghost any day now right???

I stopped by Ghost on my way home tonight. Driving to the end of the parking lot and looking west several hundred yards, the lake is open. The rest of the lake including Ghost Arm is still ice covered but the West wind is pushing the waves on the edge of the ice sheet. A small amount of open water under the bridge but not much. Both public launches are frozen solid for now. We need several more days of warm windy weather.

Easiest way to find out about Ghost is to phone the marina, they will give you an up to the minute report.

Don't have their number but you can easy find it via google.

Bump.

Just called the marina, says they're closed for the season so I couldn't get an update. Anyone has any recent updates?

Ditto, I literally just called and got the same message.

I called this past Monday, though, and he said there was a bit of ice left but by this weekend it would be off. So I'm planning on going out tomorrow.

Thanks for the update Jet. I am itching to get my boat out and it is not too far away for me to go. I think I'll take it out for a run tomorrow. Just to run around for a bit.

I too am curious as to what you were using to catch not one but 3.

You are now my Ghost Lake hero. Never had more than a 2 fish day there. Most days were a big bust.

I too would love to know how to fish on Ghost.

It's been a few years and I have yet to catch anything. Tried every method known to man (except fly's).... From trolling, down-rigging, casting/retrieving, jigging... LOL

I have no trouble catching fish anywhere else.

Caught the odd small to mid size laker around the island just right of the boat launch jigging a white tube

Have got a few nice browns down on the far west end trolling a woolly bugger with a light sinking fly line.

Know of one guy who swears by trolling buzz bombs but never worked for me. Never heard of anyone catching 3 in one day before. I like most have spent more days just going for a boat ride. Without a doubt one of Alberta's hardest lakes to fish.

Spent the entire day yesterday fishing all of these spots basically just breaking in my new boat. Not a single sniff all day long. Saw a few guys catching a few whites but what a terrible day for fishing.... May 8th can't come soon enough!

there always seems to be some going after the whites down on the far west side.

I feel for you that is one tuff lake to fish for sure. Makes you almost wonder how in the world someone could go out and land 3 trout. I for one would sure like to know that secret.

troll with down rigger like any lake trout lake , what works at cold lake or lake minnewanka will work at ghost , troll close to the bottom. we caught 2 lakers on the down rigger, and one rainbow on the surface.

If I had a dollar for every time I trolled that lake with downriggers I could retire. WAIT A MINUTE I AM RETIRED:)

Met a guy who lives and farms just north of the lake and all he uses is a sliver gray flatfish. Trolls it with a dodger and maybe 2 onces of weight seems to catch quite regularly. Tried it but no luck here.:angry3:

I will just keep with Minnewanka for my laker fishing.

Nice Catch! Was going to go for a troll tomorrow afternoon - are the fish up high or is a downrigger needed?
