I know Alberta F & W banned barbed hooks in 2013, didn't fish in 2014 but planning to grab the kids and go out to some stocked ponds around home this year. I was looking at the regulations(2014) and I could not find anything that told me that I need to pinch my barbs. I'm assuming that I will have to pinch my spinner hooks but thought I should get a little clarity if I missed something reading the regulations.

Alberta allows barbs now, although many people still fish barbless. If you search up "Alberta Fishing Regulations 2015" on Google, you will be able to access full information.

barbed hooks are allowed again but the srd is asking for a voluntary pinched barb.

Does anyone know why they are allowing it again?

The DFO removed the language regarding barbed hooks a few years ago, the province followed suit

The feds made an amendment to the Alberta Fishery Regulations in Sept. 2011 that invalidated Alberta's ban on barbed hooks. There were about 600 people who got their money back because they had been improperly fined between Sept. 2011 and whenever Alberta realized the ban was no longer legit.

I think the intention was always to re-instate the ban once they figured out how to word things properly in the legislation. But I don't even see any mention of it anymore in the 2015 regulations so maybe they have now dropped any plans to make barbless a requirement again. At any rate, there is no ban on barbless for at least the 2015 fishing season.

you can use them, but in my opinion you should not unless you plan on keeping the fish you catch. Especially if using larger hooks or trebles.

Just flatten them
Takes but a few seconds and a few pounds of pressure.
Better for catch and release
