What is the best way to get rid of a small spot of rust (which is not bad yet) off a barrel before it gets worse?

spray it with WD 40 or a gun oil, leave it soak for a day, then really rub the spot with a rough cloth. If it is not coming off, lightly rub it with 000 steel wool.

Is it your Cooey?

im assuming it a carbon steel /blued component...yes?
because using steel wool on a stainles steel barrel will only make it worse...

I've used veggie oil/canola oil before on rust with a plastic wool pad. Worked for me.

You can use just about any rust preventative, I have a product called Blue Wonder(armadillo is the logo) it does wonders for light rust spots, just follow the directions, I just use a synthetic scouring pad instead of steel wool.

Good luck.
