Kananaskis Lakes Ice Fishing

I'm at the Delta Lodge in K-country all week. We're going x-country skiing up at the lakes tommorrow. Didn't bring the fishing gear for this trip, but I'll let you know if I see anyone on the ice.

was at upper lakes last wednesday. The wind was insane and I didn't last long. Ice was ~16" and caught one sucker on a small red jig in about 20' of water.

The wind is just HOWLING up here right now. It's shaking the walls of the delta lodge we're staying in. It was the windiest I've seen on the trans canada at Scott Lake hill I think I've seen in years.

The wife and I x-country skied up over elk pass and back today. Took a tour around both lakes. Not a soul on the ice, and very very windy. Wouldn't be pleasant by any means. Lower lake has open water near the dam, and doesn't look that healthy out in the middle of the lake. Upper lake looks ok, but looks can be decieving. I'd be careful.

We spend about 3 1/2 hours there and only saw one Trout which proceeded to chew on my underwater camera for about 15 seconds. Apparently they don't eat bait. Good luck to everyone else.

I spent a freezing 10 hours on upper kananaskis last winter, was so damn windy it broke the rods in my ice hut so we were forced to build little igloo walls to sit behind! Caught one Bow all day on a small green mister twister. Although the scenary and hike in are beautiful on that lake i don't think i will try it again!

just so you know there's a bait ban in affect for these lakes.

Ahhh so thats the reason they arnt taking the bait! haha

These are both HARD lakes to fish, dont go there expecting to catch alot of fish cause the chances of catching alot are very slim, and with them having a bait ban in affect its that much harder to fish them.

These lakes are for the hawg seekers and extremely determined, patient fishermen. Ive been out there a fair number of times and there have been more times ive been skunked then caught a fish...but its well worth it.

Bingo . its alot of fun , if you got the Patients , but is well worth it . theres some monsters lurking in these lakes . But is alot harder to catch them as Lethal says with the bait ban. But Fly , or these type of things are effective.

I was fishing in canoe this august in the lower lake. Very still which is very rare for K-country. We were in the middle of the lake, flat as glass, and water ultra clear. I could see these monsters underneath me, drop a buzz bomb right on them or any other lure for that matter, and they wouldn't touch them. I even dropped a lure onto ones back and it just gave a little kick and floated away. SO frustrating!
