dont do much fishing for perch but quick strike rigs for pike using large smelts, herring or anchovies work great.

You cant beat the old faithful maggots for perch. Also, you can keep the eyes from your kept perch, as they are deadly. Just freeze them for the next time out. For pike, I like the quick strike rigs with a large smelt under a tip up.

X2 on the smelts. I have found smelts to work better than any other bait for catching pike. As for walleye small teardrop hooks in orange or white tipped with a couple of maggots seem to work well.

The largest one's i've found are at superstore. I don't know that they'd be much bigger than 4 inches though. But they seem to work well all the same.

Acutally it is not, it is lawful to use PARTS of a fish for bait, just can't use the whole thing. Check the regs and you'll see.

Perch Eyes work Amazing. Maggots are always a good choice but eyes man... Pike and perch are all over it.

Right from the regs...

"Parts of Game Fish. Only the skin, fins, eyes and dead eggs of game fish may be used as bait, provided these fish were lawfully caught by angling. Skin, fins, eyes and dead eggs of game fish may be used where the use of bait fish is prohibited, but cannot be used where bait bans are in effect. All game fish kept must be counted in the daily catch limit, including any fish from which parts are used for bait."

Here's a link, a lot of folks should check here before yapping about things they are unsure of.

for perch: maggots, mealworms, worms, eyes, cheese, small minnows or minnow pieces all work great. For pike: smelts, anchovies, minnows on a whistler jig all work. Walleye: I like a whistler jig with a minnow or if they are really timid and shy I will use a plain hook with a minnow.

Dont you just hate it when you try to help someone out, and somebody else has to come along and crap on you without knowing what they are talking about.

For pike I would say a big hook with a smelt on it.

Perch I heard people using a jig called the hali jig with a maggot, meal worm.

I have only caught 1 perch and that was on a big jig with a medium minnow!

for perch i use small jugs or a single hook with a split shot 10'' above it with a red worm(make sure 1/4'' of worm is just hanging) ... never caught a monster with it but had quiet a few 10-11''rs

good luck!

I'm assuming that since smelt are non-native to Alberta waters (as far as I know, they are sal****er fish, so they would have no chance of surviving long enough to do any damage), has a lot to do with why we can use the whole fish.

Also, I have to agree on using eyes. Someone here on AO tipped me off to using perch eyes for perch, last year. Best thing I've ever used. The eyes are super durable and the perch go absolutely insane for them.
