Hi All,

My 5 year old has been mentioning that he needs a fishing rod and would like me to take him fishing. I was hoping some of you good folks out there might know of some good spots to take a first timer? I am in the Calgary area.

Thanks!

any stocked trout pond.

better yet, Pine Coulee Reservoir (check the regs first though, it's closed til may 15)

at the latter, give him a slip float and 1/2 a smelt on a 1/4oz jig head. Off the dock works, so does under the bridge and pretty much anywhere else. Do a forum search, there are tons of threads.

Pine coulee in my mind is your best bet as well. The walleye are super easy to catch (catch and release) plus its only an hours drive south of Calgary. As stated earlier though, it is closed to fishing until May 15. Chain lakes west of Nanton can be good too for small trout. You can fish from shore, use cheese or power bait and it is open year round (5 trout limit).

The pond at the Livingston fish hatchery just off Blackfoot and 17 ave.

Great little spot, they learn to catch and release and lot's of fun for the kids.

Below the spillway used to be a great for me as a kid at chain lakes. Just where it drops down. Not sure if its technically open or not though yet. Worth looking into as trout seem to tumble over and sit in the pool below it!

I think it might be illegal to fish right below a spillway. I think you have to be so far away from it.

Been about 20 years since I did it I think, the CO's weren't too concerned than, but things have probably changed :D

I take my kids to pine coulee. They love it. We usually go along the walkway between the top parking lot and the bridge or on the grass right below the parking lot.
