Hi,
This might be the wrong discussion, but hopefully one of you experts can help.
I have an 1980 2 stroke 20HP Evinrude outboard. I have been noticing small amounts of water in the lower gear casing when i change the oil (milky). I have been changing it after every use to try to avoid damage (yes I know I have to get it fixed ASAP). I know it is not coming in the filler holes as I have new seals each oil change and have use a sealant on the threads and over the tops of the screws.
Any ideas where it could be leaking in?
Does anybody have a good source for a manual for this engine so I can do a lower end rebuild?
Your help is much appreciated.
Thanks,
Josh

Not sure where you live, but I have a service manual that I can let you use, if you are in the Edmonton area.

When I owned my 70's evinrude the only place I was able to get a manual was the public library believe it or not. It was great and free.

The closest I have in digital form is for years 1965-78, 5-35 hp. I also have 1973-1989, 48-235 hp if any of those can help.

Evinrude was taken over by Bombardier in 2000 so maybe if you go to their web you can find a download for Evinrude motors.

Shaft seal more than likely. maybe its dried out or damaged by fishing line that got in behind the prop. maybe all you need is a new seal.

This would be my guess as well. Should be able to see the condition of the seal once you pull the prop

fishing line gets caught in behind the prop and cuts into the seal there

There is a metal tag plate on the transom clamp with serial number. The model year is the last 2 letters of the number. Write out the word INTRODUCES with the numbers 1 to 0 under like this
INTRODUCES
1234567890
The year matches the number under the letter for example if Your model number is E20??CD the year is 86(1986).If the last 2 letters is CU it would be an 87 if last 2 letters EI it would be a 91. Works for any Johnson / Evinrude from mid 70's to mid 2000's
