Anyone out there prefer 3000 size spinning reels to 2500 size reels? I have two 2500 sizes but am considering a 3000 size but unsure if it's worth it.

I don't know if I necessarily "prefer" a size .... but rather I think there are ideal sizes for each application.

Spinning reels generally come in 10/100/1000 size (depending on the manufacturers code) is great for perch and pond trout whereas you might need a 30/300/3000 size for pike or laker fishing.

Generally speaking I look at the bearings and quality of the reel and drag, amount of drag (max drag) and line capacity for the type of line I'm likely to use for that set up.

Going up/down a size generally isn't a big deal and you should be ok using a range of reels for an application.

I'm not sure about other brands, but if you're looking at Shimano reels, the 2500 and 3000 size reels are identical other than the spools. The actual body of the reels, both the external size and the internal components, are exactly the same. The difference in weight is about 0.2 oz.

My advice when looking at the Shimano lineup is to go with the 3000 series over the 2500 series. It's certainly not a deal breaker either way though, the difference in line capacity is only about 30 yds of 8lb mono.

X2.

I have both the 2500 and 3000. I got the 2500 because no one had the 3000 in stock at the time. The next one I got was the 3000. One other small difference, from what walleyedude pointed out, between the two (at least on the stadics) is the grips on the handles. The 2500 comes with a smaller thumb grip while the 3000 comes with a T handle.

I purchased a couple of extra spools for each one and have them spooled with different lines, so I can quickly change lines if I feel I need to change techniques or target species.

Good luck

I have found the 1000 and 1500 are about the same. 2000 and 2500 are close. and some what interchangeable. Would guess that the 3000/3500 would be more alike especially on line capacity.

Older shimanos(some) were interchangeable new ones not so much.

Good catch, I hadn't noticed that until now.

The handles on the Stradic CI4+ are the same on 2500 and 3000.
