Hey guys,

I was planning to take my girlfriend out to Muir Lake today. She is just getting into fishing and doesn't have any fly fishing gear. Just wondering if anyone might have some insight as how to spin fish this lake. Ive fished it several times using fly gear but never using anything else.

Any insight would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Could try a few things:

1. Troll an size F5 frog-green flatfish. Naturally, try other colors too, black, silver, blue metallic, or hot orange.
2. Troll or cast a Mepps or Panther Martin spinners.
3. Troll or cast small spoons like a five of diamonds or similar.
3. Troll Using a small spinning blade for attraction, much like the walleye guys use for bottom bouncing, just smaller or toned down, but instead of using bait (of course, illegal at Muir), tie on the fly at the end of the line.
4. Troll with a plain fly and split shot to get down.
5. Use a slip bobber with a weighted fly and shot if necessary, and just "fly-fish" that way.

Lots of ways to spin fish casting or trolling, actually using spinning lures or getting creative to present flies with spinning gear.

May I encourage you to swap your treble hooks for single barbless at Muir; it will make releasing fish easier. :)

Cheers,
Smitty
