Hi in March I am going to Mayakoba, Mexico. It's in the mayan riveira. I've never fished the flats before and was wondering if you guys could share any tips.I will mainly be fly-fishing, but if that doesn't work I will use my spincasting gear. Any info what so ever would be helpful, thanks.

My wife and i are both going to the Playa del carmen area in march as well.
I've been thinking about taking my 6wt with me, but from what i understand the only bonefishing around there is either at Boca paila, which is about 50 k south of PDC or ascension bay which is another hour further south.
There are some guides down there, but they want $450 USD plus another 110 USD to pick you up at your hotel.
I ssume you're staying at the Fairmont Mayakoba..we will be about a half hour south of their at the Bahia Gran Principe. I'm still trying to find a way to get from there to Boca Paila lagoon. It is only 20 minutes away so hopefully There is bus service in the region.
PM me if you want to get together...maybe we can pool our knowledge.
BTW here's a link to one of the guide services: http://www.pescamaya.com/playa-del-carmen-fly-fishing.html

italk2u; if you can, try to get the upgrade to the diamond club if you are not in it already. it will give you full access to everything @ the resort (which is MASSIVE) including a number of ammenities that the rest of the guests can't access like free internet and a private buffet that is only accessable by diamond club guests. great resort; you may get to see some turtles laying eggs or the lil guys making the mad dash to the ocean. oh ya, and it's a lot closer to tulum than to PDC so that place may be closer than you think.

PS take a tour with alltournative adventures if you are into kayaking, hiking, repelling stuff - they do a great job of that and take you through Coba. small bus tours instead of the crazy bus-load ones
cheers

Thanks, I'll look into the diamond club for sure.
Do you know whether that little bay just ot the south of the gran principe akumal has any bonefish in it?
it seems to be accessible by a path through the jungle from what i can see on google earth.

you may be able to walk there, cheap cab though; good snorkeling in there (i had heard)but don't know about bone fish. there was a boat at the resort that you could charter by the hour; about a 20-22 foot super panga that looked outfitted to handle big fish; i'm sure you could work out a deal with them to get you into some good fly water. when we were there it was literally days before a hurricane so the fishing was a bit slow compared to what i'm used to in mexico.
cheers

Guys there is awsome bone fishing over on Cozumel. It's only a 45 minute ferry ride over from Playa De Carmen and the ferry leaves at about 7am in the morning. I have the contact information if your interested. By the way I only paid $250 American plus I gave them another $50 for a tip, plus a bunch of flies I tied. They loved the flies.

It cirtainly is worth the effort to get over there. I'd go there again in a heartbeat. I was fly fishing for them. But you can use spinning gear if you choose.

Just as a side note I caught more bones that day than I've ever caught in one day of bone fishing and I've been fishing for bones many, many times. I also landed a baracuda on the fly.

I would leave a 6wt at home though. I use a 9'6" 8wt that is a real cannon. A 6wt could be used but with tropical winds that come up every afternoon everywhere in the tropics you will be having a tough time with the 6wt. I'm not saying that you can't use it. You can use a 3 wt if you want. But for tossing a line a long distance you'll need the extra back bone that an 8wt has.

Thanks Rob, That's great advice...I've got an 8wt that i use for pike here, so it should be perfect.
BTW, any websites with recipes for flies for those bonefish.?

I stayed there last february and did fish that bay. It is accesible through the path but I never caught any bones in there, only small jacks and needle fish. I caught everything on small ( 2" ) silver and green epoxy minnow patterns. It was excellent fishing just didn't catch any big ones. The best spot I found to fish in that bay was right at the mouth on the North side there is a big tree growing on a rocky point and I cast from that point out towards open water. Usually there is a good wind so get practicing your sidearm casts. :). Good luck.
