Haven't taken my boys open water fishing much (or camping at all). I was hoping to take them for a weekend or quick mid week trip to do some camping and fishing. We do not have a boat so it would have to be from shore.

Not looking for anything fancy but don't want to be in heavy bear country either. We are outside of Edmonton and would like to keep the drive at 3.5 hours at the most.

Fishing doesn't have to be crazy busy, just catching a few hammer heads to throw back and not having to pull weeds off the hook every cast would be great.

Thanks.

A pay per night campground, or crown land?
Whats your definition of heavy bear country?

Pay per site is fine.

For easy fishing and nice bear free camping ...

for trout..Ashland dam, Mount Red reservoir.
for pike..Wizard lake. Good weed free fishing right in front of the campground.

All within 1 hour of Edmonton.

Pigeon lake.
My family is out there for a 4 night stay. On night 3 now.
There are 3 of them fishing from shore, have been catching 3 or more fish each every morning. A couple in the early afternoon, and 6+ each in the evening.
Camping isn't all that bad either.

Carson Pegasus is also an excellent choice and if I am not mistaken they also rent boats , an hour and a half from Edmonton
