Hi

A few of us were on Cold Lake today. I caught my first hard ice laker, and my friend caught his first laker period. I must say the ice magnifies these guys. We could see them swimming under the ice before they hit the hole and it was hard to tell if they were 15 or 25 lbs. In the truth they were 8.5 and 9.5 but it was fun..

Hope the links work

The ice is about 16-20 inches in spots. Nice and clear it was neat seeing then swimming around below the ice. We originally went out the provincial park route, but after watching buddy put the front of his truck in through the heave in the ice, we figured it would be a little safer near the marina.

PS buddy got out with help but I bet he had a stain in his drawers.

They were hitting a variety of Items mainly white bucktail with red in it or big white glow in the dark twister. ALso missed a really big one on a herring. The 2 we kept were full of what looked to be a 5-6 inch herring so.. would not hurt to bring some along. We were fishing 80 foot right on the bottom. But people out to 135 feet and doing alright.

Good luck

Probably Tulibee...

I did not think so because we caught some tulibee and they were way thicker and bigger. That being said at least they can easily be imitated with store bought herring.

Just got back in from fishing. We were using florecent green squids(about 2 oz.) in 100 ft. water out by the provincial park. We were using anchovies as bait. We did quite well, everyone caught at least one keeper(including me). There was 6 of us out. The best time for us was noon till we left the lake at 3:30 pm.....Ken

Been wating for some good reports on lakers. Me and a few of my freinds
are definitly heading to Cold Lake on Sunday. It looks worth the drive.
I got my first laker last year and it is something to repete, as a thrill.
Looks like you drove on at the marina.because the town is there in
the background. What about on at the Provinvical park and then driving
east? Any other good honey holes that you know of? Good tip about the bait an luers. Last year we caught mostly on those buck-tail-jigs.

We were using bucktails, variety of colors all had hits and a glow in the dark twister tail 4" This being my first time fishing lakers I do not have any special spots.. But I have heard it is slowing down off the Marina but from the sounds of it good out from the Provincial park

I have never fished them through the ice and would like some help on line selection and weight. When I ice fish for pike and the like I was always use to hand linning is this possible for those deep fish? Do you folks use some sort of snubbing systen or swivels with snaps or do you tie direct?

Does anyone know if people are making it over to Garnet Beach and a couple other spots closer to the Sask border? I wanted to try those when we were up there a couple weeks ago but didnt want to be the first one to try and cross the multiple ice heaves that appear to be in the way to get over there.

Noone was at the beach yet. You can get around the ice heaves but I think enough fish were being caught that people were happy on this side. That being said the snow is a little deep in spots so need 4x4
